I was just looking at the "new" AHS definition of a patterned daylily and decided to do a search in the database but noticed under "Bloom Traits" there has not been a "Patterned" description added.
I don't know if that is something @dave would have to do are what the procedure would be to get it added.

An admin like @Calif_Sue should make the decision on whether we should add the field to our database here.

Pattern is searchable in the AHS database (under Color in Description)

"Pattern" is searchable here too in the color description box and brings up 2288 results. "Patterned eye" in the color box brings up 1082. "Patterned" in the color box + checking eye or band brings up 1484 results.

Good to know, but wouldn't it be more obvious and more consistent in presentation to have "Patterned" listed, maybe along with Dotted, Stippled, Streaked or Variegated?

Char,
I just pulled up those over 2228 listings with some form of the word pattern in the description, of those listed I am guessing maybe a fraction of a percentage would actually fit the new AHS description of a patterned daylily.
https://daylilies.org/daylily-...
I would expect that term to be used exponentially more now that it has been recognized and defined? Will it be possible to narrow down a search to fit that term so the non relevant things like eyes, and appliques will not be included?

The "new" description clarifies a few things regarding what is included, or not, but the term has been defined in the AHS Daylily Dictionary for over a decade, this is from 2012

sooby,
Would the last photo example ( Maryott seedling showing contrasting midrib color pattern.) still be considered to be a "Patterned" daylily?

Probably not, it's not on the new pattern page and simple contrasting midribs alone are now specifically excluded in the text.

That was what I was trying to point out with the different ways of searching. The search data is pulled from the written descriptions so if a hybridizer uses "pattern" in their description then it would come up in the search. These are the current searchable terms under Bloom Traits...
Color Changer
Self
Applique/Appliqué
Bitone or Reverse Bitone
Bicolor or Reverse Bicolor
Eye or Band
Edged
Edge No Eye
Toothed or Fringed Edge
Dotted, Stippled, Streaked or Variegated
Halo
Watermark
Diamond Dusted

From your checking the search and seeing the same thing I did, I'm not sure "pattern" is what should be added to the search list. "Patterned" still brings up some that do not fit the AHS def of "pattern". "Patterned eye" in the search box (1082) gets closer to what I think you were asking for with "pattern"? That seems to block out most (but not all because of use by the hybridizer) of the solid eyes and simple appliques. "Patterned" + checking eye or band (1484) brings up nonpatterns.
@Calif_Sue what do you think?

It's been a bit of a problem as often hybridizers use different terms or words to try to describe their intro and as sooby and Char pointed out, sometimes their descriptions has no actual connection to an actual registered patterned daylily.
Dave has added several descriptive words that get picked up in the descriptions of the registrations and because of the way a hybridizer may write it, it lands in an incorrect bloom trait. For instance, some mention a small ruffled edge and now that word 'edge' lands it as an official Edged daylily. We have had trouble with the tooth/fringe category because different words get used by the hybridizer.
Char has done a tremendous amount of work editing new intros to properly reflect the correct search aspects.
If any of you have any suggestions of terms that may be needed to increase the accuracy for any search, please let us know and we'll see if we can all come to a consensus for making any needed features that we can request Dave to add.
The AHS hybridizers are a prolific group of happy daylily growers, they just hit the 100,000 mark of registered daylilies (and it was one of Char's intros that officially hit that number Hurray! ) and so strides in hybridizing brings changes and we will try to keep up in our database!

@Char, I'm guessing the words 'dots' and 'stipples' need to be added. Dotted, Stippled isn't enough.

Yes, I see "dots" and "stipples" coming up more often so if Dave could add that to his code that would be great! Thumbs up

Ok @Dave so far can you add:

Under Plant Traits 2 new categories:
Cold Morning Opener(CMO)
and then catch Early Morning Opener, EMO, Cold Morning Opener, CMO in the descriptions found in the registered color description info.

Self Cleaning and catch that in the color descriptions and maybe also the phrase 'self cleaner'

Add additional 'catch' words for the Bloom Traits- for this categoryDotted, Stippled, Streaked or Variegated
dots
stipples
stippling
stripes

@Calif_Sue the requested data fields have been added.

Regarding your proposal to catch these items: You have "Early Morning Opener" and EMO. Those should check off "Early Morning Opener" not Cold Morning Opener, right?

Yes, I should have separated that a bit. From the ADS site, they are slightly different in their definitions.

Cold Morning Opener:
An informal term indicating that a daylily opens completely even when temperatures are low. The actual temperature that determines a CMO is not defined; having a series of cool temperature nights is also a factor. CMO is more of a concern in temperate regions.

Early Morning Opener:
An informal term used by daylily growers to indicate a cultivar with flowers that fully open early in the morning. This trait is particularly desired by daylily growers who work during the day and wish to view their daylilies before leaving for work. Some nocturnal daylilies can be mistaken for EMO's but their flowers actually open the evening before and are open all night.

My nights are cooler during summer than many hybridized in the more humid warmer states so I appreciate both. Thumbs up
