And there are a couple more things blooming right now, this one is Stenocoryne aureofulva. I took it inside to take some pictures.

And the silly Bulbophyllum tremulum with its tiny hairy brushes trembling in the slightest breeze.

Both Orchids like to bloom in the warm Summer for me.

Wow, Ursula! That Bulbophyllum tremulum is "fun"! Tiny 'hairbrushes'! Haven't seen anything like that before. Very cute!

Sweet little hair brushes. Lovely Love Knot, too.

Finally the first tiny flower on my Epi. magnoliae open this morning. Difficult lighting with bright sun peeking through the oak branches, so I will try again in the evening. The flowers are exquisite tiny (about a cm.) classic orchid shapes, with slightly tinged pink petals and an ivory lip. Fragrance is not happening yet, but last year was fantastic for such tiny flowers.

Regarding the re-naming - actually some things got easier. I no longer have to remember which of my vandaceous Orchids is an Ascda or a Vanda. Vanda is just fine. I would still recoil at calling my beloved Neofinetia a Vanda though.

For those who are watching this, note that so far, every name Ken has sent me has been changed. This is not so important to the average orchid fancier but it you are in the business, like Ken, or if you want to enter your plants for judging, like I sometimes do, you have to know the correct name of the plant and both of the parents. You should also know that the tag that comes with your newly purchased plant may not be up to date.

Jim, you are exactly right. In my opinion and experience, very, very few commercial sellers have changed any of their labels and thus those tags that are sent along with orchids are incorrect. I actually called two of the large, commercial growers/hybridizers (in Hawaii) and they both told me they could not take the time and did not want to spend the money changing their hundreds or thousands of labels to reflect the name change. They were both very upfront with me about that. Basically they said: "If you want to have the correct name on the labels, you will have to do it yourself".

You must have a wonderful program at hand to give me the correct names so quickly. I do greatly appreciate your effort. IF you are still in the laundry-mode, here are a few more (I warned you I had a lot of varieties! LOL):

Mom came running at me with a tag today asking me what kind of orchid she had. And I said, "Apparently a cattleya mixed with a cattleya." She said it had four buds on it but what caught my eye is one of the parents was 'Penny Kuroda' which of course, has been such a star for Ursula in the last few weeks. Should be interesting to see what Mom's cross looks like.

Jim, does Rhyn. exist, an abbreviation for Rhyncholaeliocattleya?

Ken, looks like Jim is folding laundry, but I think Rhyn. is the abbreviation for Rhyncholaelia, . . or maybe Rhynchovola?

The short answer to your last question is no. Rhyn is not an orchid abbreviation. Rhy. is as close as you can get but it stands for Rhynchostylis. When they combine two or three genera together the abbreviation tends to come from all three, not just the first of the series. Also of note is when they combine more that three genera together, they do not form these multi-letter words like Brassolaeliocattleya but rather chose a word that ends in "ara". For example, a Brassavola X Cattleya X Laelia X Schomburgkia X Sophronitis is a Fergusonara. Another example is Potinara, which is the name of a hybrid of orchids which have Brassavola, Cattleya, Laelia and Sophronitis as parent genera.

Now, back to your request:

Jim, I'm thinking that Rhy digbyana is therefore in each of the above x's and the Laelia has to be a Mexican type because the Brazilian Laelias are now Catts. And some of those above have l purpurata, and other Brazilian ones, so the L should be dropped because they are in fact Catt.

OK, I admit it, I am dumb and don't understand why the Blc. Mahina Yahiro x C. Ruth Gee 'Diamond Jubilee', which according to my label is FCC/AOS, would not be registered. An FCC not registered!? It is practically impossible to find this plant and when I take divisions, they are sold immediately, with a waiting list for more divisions. Please explain this registration protocol or lack of.
