Roemer's Sage (Salvia roemeriana)

Haven't grown this beauty yet.

Native to the hilly Edwards Plateau in Texas, also parts of Arizona and in Mexico. Grows in well-drained areas dappled shade to partly sunny. The name Cedar Sage refers to it often growing in the shade of the native Ashe Junipers, commonly called mountain cedars. After being established, it is drought tolerant. Besides the ones in my yard, some grow in native rocky soil near my driveway and only get rainfall in this arid climate, yet they are spreading and they bloom every year. The foliage is fragrant.

Linda, can they be grown into containers? I'd love to grow it sometime and I'm hoping Kermit at FBTS offers it.

Sure. I know the nurseries here have them in pots.

Be aware that in hot-summer climates Salvia roemeriana goes cleistogamous during the summer so you only get a brief blooming display in spring and, occasionally, a few flowers in the fall. In milder areas, like coastal CA, it can actually bloom all summer long. The spring display on established plants is really pretty, though, and the color is lovely. It would be wonderful if there was a form that would bloom longer here.

Thanks for the info. Guess I'd be better off growing another salvia instead, esp. since I don't have a longer growing season as both Linda and you.

That is not my experience here with Cedar Sage. They usually bloom for a fairly extended time in the spring, occasionally in summer (depending on heat, I guess) and some blooms can occur in fall also. But then, too, I have numerous Cedar Sage plants, so I suppose if I only had one, the blooms would certainly be less. Cleistogamy has to do with plants being able to form seeds from a form of closed blooms even if extreme heat keeps them from making more visible flowers, I believe.

I've grown Salvia roemeriana 'Hot Trumpets' as an annual (in a pot)and did very well one year and not so great the next. Go figure. Take a look in the datbase.
