It needs to go through different stages, that's why when you plant them outside in the fall they may or may not come up that next spring. They need the warm first.
I am new here on the peony forum, and usually post on the daylily forum, but I was looking around for another issue with my peonies and saw this post.
I have self-seeded peonies that pop up around the garden on a regular basis. I guess from seed pods that escape being deadheaded. I see them when they are very tiny and will leave them for a year to let them get a bit of size before I move them. I moved seven this spring, and just found another one to move.
I have two blooming size plants from my seedlings now, one single white (a seedling from Krinkled White), and one double that has very pretty colouring (a very deep pink with silvery edges).
Really, I don't know. I never have planted a peony seed, these are just seed pods that I have missed deadheading and they 'popped' as you said and the seeds planted themselves. When I was mulching today, I found two more peony babies. These are at the feet of Fancy Nancy. They are just a single leaf.
Krinkled White is planted next to Gay Paree.

I have wondered about tree peony seeds producing a recognizable tree peony seedling since they should mostly be hybrids to begin with and their parentage uncertain.

The ones I moved this year are 3 years old, and no buds this year, but I am very hopeful for next year. They are in a very nice sunny location, so they should do well. Yes, you have to be patient to grow peonies from seed My wee new babies I found this year have a long road ahead of them
Thank you everyone for the welcome. I have few older cultivars, such as Yellow King and High Fashion, that some of you may not have seen.
I tried once to grow tree peony seeds, but did not get germination. I should just leave a pod and see if they will grow themselves without my interference like the herbaceous ones
We're ALWAYS interested in seeing peony pictures, Valerie! I purchased High Fashion from Bannister's last year when they were having their retirement sale but have never heard of Yellow King. Is it an Itoh like Yellow Emperor?
As for the tree peony seeds, I purchased 3 packets from APS, absolutely nothing 1st spring. This spring I have babies from two of them! Think there was a total of 3 from 2 varieties, haven't looked in a while. Today is a clean up the garden and plant dahlias day, I'll try to take some pics of my seedlings to share. Hopefully I'll have my first herbaceous peony bloom to share today as well, Nova was 2/3 of the way open when I came in last night. Seeing slivers of color on several other buds but think it'll be at least another week or two.
