My neice sent me this photo asking what it is, I'm not sure, she is wanting to know sun/shade etc. I was thinking Azaela family??? Any help would be great!! Thanks!!

For sure, azalea. Evergreen and probably not too cold hardy. Had a friend who grows one like this indoors with only overhead lighting, keeps it very dry and it blooms almost all the time. There are at least 2 plants in there that is why the different flowers.

Yes, that's an azalea. Might be one of the Encores. I grow them here in my zone 6b and they do fine. Azaleas grow in zones 5-9.
The prefer broken shade and morning sun, and they need acidic growing conditions in order to bloom well.

Thanks so much for your help, and the pics are AWSOME!!!!!!!! I have 2 smaller ones, but they were planted a little too close to the barn so they aren't near as large as yours!! I have passed along the info., and told her to MULCH MULCH MULCH them!!!

You're welcome. The zones can certainly make a lot of difference in which azaleas do well there and just how the plants do in general. It's good to know the name and species of your azaleas and research that particular variety. One size doesn't fit all.

Laura: I agree, that pretty potted plant is an Azalea and it does indeed look like there might be two different plants in the pot. As SongofJoy stated, they like acidic soil. Tell your daughter that she can dig a bit of coffee grounds into the top of the soil when she plants them ... azalea's love the acid that coffee grounds provide. Tee: Those Azalea's in your garden are beautiful! I miss having Azalea's. For many years we had huge ones all around our home ... some were transplanted elsewhere in the garden and a few were lost to hurricanes one year when two large trees fell on them.

Thanks, Lin. I often hear people complain about azaleas having too short of a bloom period. But if earlier and later varieties are planted, that bloom period is extended to at least six weeks or more here. Mine are all across the front of the house and interplanted with Glossy Abelias that then blooms all summer long. And when Azaleas are in bloom, how can you top them? ♥

These were here when I moved in so I had to give them a good big pruning and get some good acid fertilizer around them, but, boy, did they ever reward that.

Tee: Azalea's don't bloom long down this way. It seems they will burst into glory and after a week or two we get heavy rain that knocks the blooms off ... but I agree, when they are in full bloom nothing much tops them! I planted them at my old house when we first moved there in 1973, they were small plants but got really huge. We had to transplant the ones across the front of the house to a different location in the yard because they were blocking the windows. I've seen a few in my area in bloom lately and I always know that spring has truly arrived when the Azalea's are in full bloom!

Would you say your bloom period there is 3 or 4 weeks or ?
