I'm new to this site, and have found it to be a wonderful resource. I moved to Arkansas (7a) last winter and I'm looking to connect with gardeners familiar with my new locale.
I mostly have veggies this year, but I have some hostas and azaleas, as usual. I've just gotten into foxgloves this year, and I'm digging them (har!).
I was hoping with the long, hot summers here, I would have luck with some new peppers. No luck on my chipotles or scotch bonnets. I'm growing from seed, and I don't have a greenhouse (yet). Any Arkansans had any luck with these guys?

I don't think my experience on the coastal PNW would be helpful - we had a "hot" day recently that went OVER 75 degrees!

There are members who've added their approximate locations to their profile, in or around Arkansas. You can search to find them:

(If you want to be that visible, click on the "head and shoulders" icon in the upper left corner, and fill out :

- "Your location" (as approximate as you wish, like "Central AR" or "Near Russellville")

That appears in the corner of every post and helps people answer questions, since the same question might have a different answer for AR, AK and AL. each time you update your "public profile" info, it changes in every post you've made, even old ones!

I used to think that the hardiness Zone was useful, but then I heard that someone in Texas Zone 8 had his first crop of tomatoes dying from heat before my coastal WA Zone 8 was warm enough at night to put out my only crop of cherry tomatoes!

Or the regional forum for Arkansas is the "SouthEast Gardening" forum.

I grow all sorts of peppers (including jalapenos - you can't really 'grow' chipotles, they are smoke-dried jalapenos, and habaneros) here in the Michigan Upper Peninsula, so I'm sure you can grow them in Arkansas. Did you plant your seeds directly in the ground? or did you start them in pots or some such thing? I would suggest starting them in small pots or '6-packs' under lights, about 8 weeks before you want to set them out in your garden.

I started all my peppers outdoors in small starter packs, Weedwacker. No problems with all the others, just Scotch Bonnets and Chipotles. I had heard Chipotles were other peppers smoked, but when I came across the seeds labeled "chipotle", I bought 'em. Label them chipotle, label me a sucker. Whatevs. I'm more disappointed about the Bonnets.
As my gardening infrastucture improves here, I hope to be able to do more indoors and maybe even work out a greenhouse. Big dreams.

Hi Neighbor! I live in Hardy, Ar area now for about a year. Moved from Memphis, so different soils as you can relate to. I have a small growing area, sunny but dries due to being a raised bed. I only have Iris in it but want to put in veg next season, maybe even sunflowers?
