Hello, I am back from a trip out West. I loved seeing the aspen groves. Will they grow in my Old KY Home? Thanks!

The quaking aspen is very good for many many climates. It is one of the most widespread species in North America and can be found from Canada to the mountain ranges of Mexico. I think they would do quite well in Kentucky! They are great in clumps or in rows, however, I really like seeing them as single specimens in a greater planned area. They are fast growing and will be of "good size" in just a few years time. Thumbs up

That sounds like good news, James. Now, I must be on a search for a local nursery!

Good luck! When/if you make a decision and do some planting, be sure to post pictures! Thumbs up

I will James, now I just have to locate one. I have a tree/shrub nursery a few miles away so maybe he could order me one. Hurray!

I'm curious if you tried planting Aspens in Ky and if so, did you have any success?

We visited Telluride and brought back a few aspen pups and put them into pots. Here we are a few years later and we are finally ready to plant them in the ground. They lasted the deep freeze in above ground pots we had here in L'ville at Christmas (-30*F windchill). They are actually looking great right now and we need them out of the pots.
Question is, since these have rhizomes to propagate, are we ok to plant without a barrier? Will the roots run and cause pups to spring up all over the place? Having dealt with bamboo in a prior life, I am aware of invasive root systems. If aspen trees will spread, I am ready to purchase an 18" 30mil root barrier from Amazon to corral the planted trees. Anyone confirm that I definitely need to do this?

So you've heard of a Pando, right? Hilarious! its estimatted the Fishlake pando has 40,000 trees on 1 root system.

Fortunately plants don't feel windchill, only warm blooded animals do. Unfortunately, you live outside aspen trees preferred comfort zone. Your trees won't have a long life. They are very prone to several fungal diseases, even in the right growing conditions.

A barrier 24 inches deep should be enough... should be.
