Here is the official word from AHS on what is an appliqué throat and what isn't:

"The important distinction between appliqués and normal extended throats is that there is no bleeding of color from the throat to the petal color and that there is a strong contrasting color separation, not soft blending. Examples of extended throats that are not appliqués can be seen in H. 'Emerald Starburst' (Doorakian 2004) and in 'Kermit’s Scream.'"

I encourage y'all to post photos, even if a cultivar has already been posted. Part of the fun will be to see how much variation there is in just a single cultivar.

These are very intriguing to me. I only have a few, some of which are already pictured above.

Spacecoast Sea Shells--beautiful for a first year in the garden

Aerial Appliqué--had a rough time with the warm winter and cold spring; it was very discolored and had sparse blooms. It also bloomed extremely early (on May 1st) last year! Hoping it will make up for it this year.

Great start! Keep 'em coming.

If you're new here and wondering if one of your daylilies has an applique throat, check it out in the NGA daylily database: The Daylilies Database

What appears to be wrong with this AHS description of Terry Lyninger?

Thumb of 2017-03-11/LarryR/91a8c8
"applique eye above green throat"

First correct answer gets three acorns.

well the eye is red. The main color of the throat is not green either. I guess I don't even get it anyway, are they describing the red AS the applique? Because the red to me is an eye, the yellow between the throat and the eye is where the applique should be. I guess I just don't see it as applique.

I'd say that the demarcation between throat and eye and eye and petal color isn't clean/ precise enough. Too much blending/ stippling... To my eye anyhow.

Regarding the cultivar H. 'Terry Lyninger':

First, what you call the "AHS definition" is what was submitted by the hybridizer, as you know. Back at that time, prior to the current or previous registrar, the person before then was not as conscientious about copying the exact registration description and would sometimes shorten what the hybridizer had written. I know this because some hybridizers complained to me and even showed me where their original description had been shortened. So only Jack Carpenter knows what he actually wrote on that registration form. Secondly, appliques were still fairly new back in 2003 when he registered this. I got this plant from him back when he introduced it , and grew it for 13 years, until last year.
Based upon what I saw here, ( see below)
Thumb of 2017-03-11/floota/dd25e3 Thumb of 2017-03-11/floota/77de8f

if I had been registering this, I probably would have described it as "yellow with red eye and appliqued throat." I DO think the pattern of the throat is defined enough to qualify it as an applique.

Here are some other appliques that grow/grew here:

Sp. Seashells and Arnette Zapel

Star of India was hybridized by the late Pat Roberts, who lived in the San Diego, CA area. She and her husband Sanford ( who hybridized Point of View) were mentors of Gary Colby, a daylily friend. Star of India was the cultivar that Bob Selman used to get the applique pattern on his "Alien" series that he still works on. It was one of the early appliques. I grew this for many years and know that Pat Stamile used it too. Note that she did NOT register it as "appliqued" but "with yellow cream" throat when she registered it in 1992. I believe that others coined the term "applique" to describe this trait later.

I guess at some point whether the pattern of the throat is defined enough becomes an opinion. Then there is confusion on whether those are one or the other.

Ginny, click the image you want then copy the BB Code and paste into your post. You can check to see if it worked by doing a post preview.

Going from memory and not taking the time to check my garden list there are at least 9 currently growing here.

Waggle Dance single and as a poly.

Malala, a sibling to Waggle Dance. Both are from Spacecoast Sea Shells X Cobraskin Necktie.

Rorschach Test, another Spacecoast Sea Shells kid.

Cobraskin Necktie, mentioned above. Chinese Scribe a hardy evergreen from Munson.

John Karl Seager, an early one from Curt Hanson and parent to one of my favorites, Aqua Tech.

New Paradigm was new here last year and produced some pretty blooms...held up well in the rain, too. A Tet. Terry Lyninger kid.

Catcher in the Eye was here for years before a cold winter with no snow cover killed the entire clump.

Spacecoast Sea Shells was not happy here and was given to a friend in a warmer zone.

Spacecoast Pattern Plus has done well for me.

Neon Rainbow was an early addition to the garden, sold it to make room for something else. Same with Time to Fly...

I'm sure I'll think of more after I post this....

I really like the looks of Cosmic Blast Regina! Thumbs up

Lots of great photos and discussion.

Julie, you get the three acorns! Great information in your post. What I was after was the fact that applique applies to throats only, and the description for this John Carpenter introduction says "applique eye."

The throat pattern is much like that of many appliques. If you look more closely, however, there is no sharp distinction between the color of the throat and the color of the petals. The transition is blurred.

What a great gift, Virginia! I'm guessing that appliques with ruffles like Outstanding smile are fairly rare. I've not seen any like it.
