That one certainly looks like and applique to me. Is that your photo of it, there are none in the database here?

Bron,
So glad to you posted 'Pharaoh's Treasure'. Kabby asked if I was interested in acquiring it in a trade. I said yes because it reminded me of an applique! I also have 'Spacecoast Sea Shells' but I have never thought of it as looking like an applique.

Larry, I have enjoyed reading this thread and everyone's input. Thumbs up

My interest in the applique CVs is growing, but I currently only have one applique in my collection. It is Sp. Sea Shells. I have yet to see it bloom in person as it was only added last year. For me the applique, has to have that distinct sharp edge with no bleeding, as already mentioned in a previous description and the AHS definition. This is my reason for adding Sp.SS. Of the ones being shared here, it along with Sp. Behavior Pattern, and Catcher in the Eye are catching my eye. I feel that my wallet may get lighter in the near future. Whistling

Did a little window shopping this morning and have inquired about,
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Bella Isabella')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'New Paradigm')
Hopefully in the near future, these two will be added.

I looked at these and may consider adding them as well.
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Amber Rhum') & Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Beyond the Sea')

Looking at the photo's, some of these seem to show variations. I wonder if the sharp edge variance is similar to that of patterns, in which they sometimes fade due to growing conditions, fertilization and amendments. Or perhaps even garden locations. Shrug!

This is why I always try to look for local reports or photo's of nearby growers before deciding to add a CV.

Stan, those are some great choices. Thumbs up

As we move along here, it's becoming ever more clear that the applique moniker is not as cut and dried as I first assumed.

A couple looks from Violet Stained Glass. Sometimes, usually early, blooms get really weird.

I love the appliques and have quite a few, as I'm trying to cross them with Guy Pierce's huge green throated beauties.

INNER SPIRIT

COOL CRYSTALS

ROSEATE STAINED GLASS

FLAMINGO CROSSING

RACING THE MOON

DEEP IMPACT - The only diploid applique in my collection

PLAYFUL TUNES

TUMBLED GLASS - This is my only picture so far, and it looks a little more blended than an applique should -- but if you look at the hybridizer's picture in the AHS (ADS) database you can clearly see that overlay look.

BRAVING THE ELEMENTS

TAVARES GRAND FINALE - Two looks

BRAGGING RIGHTS

I think appliques have a special look, but I think the surest way to make sure it's an applique is to check the hybridizer's description.

I think what makes it applique is that the transition from throat to eye or the rest of the bloom is jagged and sometimes splotchy. All throats bleed into the rest of the bloom, but applique seems to be when there's an obvious uneven... jaggedness for lack of a better word.

Normal throat, even though there are parts of the throat that bleed way into the eye.

Betty's INNER SPIRIT - definitely applique because you can't miss that jagged transition into the rest of the bloom

Yes, I think you've got it Tim -- and I don't mind at all. I think daylilies that have the throat blending or bleeding into the eye or rest of the petal cannot be appliques, but those where it looks like you could literally cut that throat part out, even if it is not jagged but clearly smooth, and put it on top of the rest of the petal, look like appliques to me. I hope I've got it right, and I'm really not totally sure because several of the daylilies with the huge green throats look to me like they could also be considered appliques...

Yeah, it's amazing that I can only find one appliqué in my whole garden, the aforementioned Spacecoast Sea Shells

I should have more but lost a few. There should be some next summer.

It seems pretty clear that the AHS definition pertains to a flower's throat and the dividing line between the throat and "the surrounding petal tissue." I took that to mean the main petal color OR the eyezone color. I think this is borne out by all the pics of cultivars with contrasting throats and eyezones above.

Since there's no such thing as an "appliqued eye," how would a hybridizer describe a cultivar where the EYEZONE color is clearly delineated from and doesn't bleed into the outer petal color? After all, if a throat color can stop at a sharp line, surely EYEZONE color can too?

I tried to find an example, but all of the cultivars I grow fall short (there's bleeding/blending between eye/band color and outer petal color). All the Intangibles is close, but it's not exactly what I'm talking about.

I think you have to leave dark eyes out of the appliqué thing. It always seems to be a light yellow, white or lime colored throat, patterning out into the eye or main color of the flower. When I checked even my most delineated dark eyes, there was always some pixelation at the outer edges.
