That really is a beautiful gift plant, Virginia -- congratulations!

I love the appliques and am hoping to make some crosses this year with a few of the TET ROSE F. KENNEDY and TET EMERALD STARBURST seedlings I've purchased over the last couple of years. I'd really love to see what seedlings those crosses might create. So I've been collecting some appliques over the past few years:

ROSEATE STAINED GLASS - So far this one is my favorite -- probably because of the huge greenish throat.

I too have Faberge Easter but wasn't sure if it was an applique:

Since it didn't show it on the database as an applique, I was also wondering about my Dragonfly Dawn?? Can anyone tell me on this one?

I think there are still a few more, maybe I should get the plant list out. Whistling Neat idea for crosses Betty. You'll have to show us your progress once you get some seedlings blooming.

Legalily,
I think of Dragonfly Dawn being more of a patterned eye type of daylily, it just does not have the distinct look of a applique to me.

Some beautiful images. I have always liked appliqués but don't have that many of them.

Great collection of appliques, Betty!

Larry, great thread idea! I think I only have one Applique in my whole garden right now and it is Aerial Applique.... And wouldn't you know, it was one of the four ou five daylilies that didn't bloom last year. I've never seen a bloom on it (got it in 2015, I think).

Does Amethyst Prism count? To me, the prisms seem like a subset of the appliques.

Let me know what you think of this one. Applique or no?

Zone of Illusion (Evick 2010)

Description: "lavender red with patterned pink lavender eye above green to yellow throat"

There's no mention of applique. By naming this cultivar 'Zone of Illusion,' do you think he was referring to the throat pattern and indicating that it gives the illusion of being an applique?

To me, I think it clearly has an applique. There is a chance you may be overthinking the name of it, but who knows?

To me it seems to be that the combination of colors cause it to look less like an Applique, because it just sort of blends in with the eye. I guess it to me is not a strong contrasting color separation. Of course that is just my opinion others may see it differently, glad I am not the one deciding if a daylily is or is not an applique.

So, can you have an applique with a watermark, or does it need to have a darker eye ring than the remaining portion of the petals/sepals? If an applique with a watermark is OK, I'd say it's an applique.

From the AHS dictionary:
"The term "applique" comes from the French word for "apply", and in art refers to one material applied to the surface of another. Hybridizer Bill Munson used the term to describe throats in daylilies such as Hemerocallis 'Chinese Temple Flower' (Munson-I. 1980). An appliqued throat has the appearance of being raised and applied or painted onto the surface color(s) of the tepals. The applique can be variable over time and location."
I guess this is a distinction that I am not seeing in "Zone of Illusion" the throat to me does not have that painted on look about it. It has more of a normal throat appearance. But, looking back at some of the other flowers posted they actually don't have that look either.

That does not look like an appliqued THROAT to me, going by the picture you submitted of 'Amethyst Applique.' But it appears this hybridizer is attempting to use the term to describe the way the patterned eye looks to him. Debatable. Not sure we'd get a consensus on this. If we're using the word "applique" to apply to how the throat of the bloom looks, I'd say definitely NOT. JMHO.

I just received a reply to a note I sent to Dave Evick this morning, asking about Zone of Illusion. Here is what the hybridizer says:

Larryr, Thanks for your inquiry, I did not name it Zone of Illusion because of its small applique throat. In 2010 there weren't many applique flowers and didn't think much about it. I named it for the watermark that surrounds the applique throat and I liked the name. I sold out and didn,t sell any for a few years. I now have a few to sell and appliques are popular so there seems to be some interest. I've been working on appliques in my hybridizing program and i will have some intros in the near future. If your interested in seeing my intros and future intros type in Stone Palace Daylilies and go to my facebook sight and go to photos and albums and you can see lots of daylilies. Yes it is a small applique? Keep in touch and thanks, Dave

As I continue to research appliques, I keep running into puzzling descriptions. Here's another example:

Thumb of 2017-03-15/LarryR/bdaf73
Herman's Pick
"Green throat into a yellow green patterned eye on lavender petals and sepals"

To me, this is clearly an applique throat and not a yellow green patterned eye.

Agree?
