Please direct me to the database entry for Iris versicolor Purple Flame, a new cultivar introduced by Mt. Cuba Center.

Carol, we apparently don't have an entry for Iris versicolor 'Purple Flame' (probably because it's new) and I couldn't find any information when doing a google search.

@KentPfeiffer is the administrator for the Iris Database so I'm sure he will be able to help.

Do you have any further information about it? There's nothing on Mt. Cuba's website about this plant.

@KentPfeiffer,

Does Mt. Cuba's Facebook description provide enough additional information for a new entry?

https://www.facebook.com/MtCub...

If not, what entry should I use?

Thanks very much.

Judging by the images you've uploaded to the database, I'm guessing you made a recent visit to the Mt. Cuba Center, Carol? The reason I ask is this, the plant is apparently not registered with the American Iris Society, it's apparently not available for sale, and Mt. Cuba's own website contains no information about it what so ever. Normally, I'd like to see something from at least one of those sources before adding an entry to the Irises Database. However, if you have a picture of the plant you want to upload it to the database, I'll go ahead and create the entry and hope that Mt. Cuba follows through with eventually making it available for sale or at least provides more information about it.

@KentPfeiffer,
Yes, I toured Mt. Cuba on Sunday, and I do have an image to upload. Please do create an entry.
Thank you.

@KentPfeiffer,

I asked Mt. Cuba's Librarian and Archivist, Liz Fite ([email protected]), about AIS registration for 'Purple Flame' and received the following reply:

"We successfully registered 'Purple Flame' with the AIS back in August of 2017. However, it's not available commercially yet. We're in the process of working with the local nurseries to make it available to the general public and we're hoping that will happen within the next two years or so."

So I am confused as to why you did not find it to be registered.

At the moment, AIS registrations are only current through 2016. The 2017 registrations should be published sometime in the next few weeks.

That solves the mystery. Thanks, @KentPfeiffer.

Posting on an old thread --

I can confirm that this variety is now available commercially. I've purchased it from Spring Hill for delivery this fall. Smiling

Thank you, Amazindirt! When I saw this plant at Mt. Cuba, it was growing right next to a pond, and the Spring Hill website suggests planting it next to water and mentions that it develops the bi-color foliage in wet soil:

I don't have the right conditions for this lovely plant. I hope it does well for you.

I make the right conditions for my moisture lovers by planting them in pots that sit in kiddie wading pools. :-)

And thanks for the acorn!
