I planted three Arisaema speciosum 'Himalayan Giant' tubers in ground in 2010. Two together and the 3rd elsewhere in the yard. All in mostly shade. The two I planted together bloomed in '10 and last year. The 3rd never sent up any green that I noticed and I wrote it off. This is what I found this afternoon.
This is a bed I planted last year with Xanthosoma although not in this spot. Am I unobservant or were the offsets just growing away all along?

That would indeed make me happy if this was the case in my garden.
About 2 (maybe 3) years ago, I planted two corms of Arisaema griffithii, survived their first winter, next spring some sickly leaves, then after another winter (much harsher) nothing came up. So this spring 2012 NOTHING.
I waited and waited... and when I got angry I kinda dug up a large hole (I knew exactly where they were supposed to appear) and still could not find anything other than dirt.
Should I still have some hopes for next spring?

Arisaema griffithii behaved the same way for me Calin! That was years ago, and I also found nothing when I went searching for it. I have had Arisaema griffithii 'Pradhanii' for several years, it was a huge tuber, I kept that in a cold greenhouse in a pot. It regenerated and made a small tuber which I'm not sure survived after the very harsh winter we had 2010/11.

Oh well... I guess I'll just keep hoping till next spring

I bought 'Pradhanii' with the A. speciosum and only one survived for a few years. I planted grifithii this year hoping it would prove hardier but wonder if our winters have too much freeze/thaw for many Arisaema.

Well Evan, I'm not discouraging you... I guess spring will tell!
But if it does survive, you'll be thrilled like me, even if just leaves emerge

Have you seen the sticky here about building a greenhouse cheaply? I think you might benefit from the information there. Also I have a thought about how to use it. If you built something you could move in the summers, you could protect your plants through the winter. Just put a small heater or something in the greenhouse you build to keep the ground from freezing inside, & presto...no more frozen bulbs...Is only a thought, & I do not know if it would work without being a permanent structure, but what have you got to lose if your already losing the bulbs each year?links to greenhouses listed on site below.

Building a greenhouse has been bouncing around in my head for a while and the desire keeps getting fed by posts like yours. It's all those tropical Aroids that don't go dormant that I think about. There are so many Arisaema that are hardy up here that I'm searching for the ones that I can give the right conditions. I think part of my problem is getting the soil right, protection from winter wet and such. I have A. speciosum under a spruce and they're very happy. Winter dry I think. I lost A. serratum in a pot no less. I think I over watered in regular Miracle Gro potting soil.

Go with my approach to Coleus. I drown them if I try to "take care of them" so instead I completely ignore them. They get showered when I shower my aroids, & watered randomly when I decide to notice them. I treat them as if the water I am using is expensive & they don't deserve it. HEHE imagine that. Beautiful plants like Coleus not deserving water. The approach seems to be working with them though. During your winter months when you overwinter bulbs, you might try this approach. I do not have the problem, so I have no idea if it would work!

A question about your spruce. Does it shed a lot of needles or material over your plant in the winter? If so I would assume it is providing the bulbs with a dry blanket, & possibly a bit of heat due to decomposition. Also evergreens tend to acidify soil. Not sure if that means anything to your plant.

The spruce certainly does shed needles Noel but not a whole lot. A. speciosum is supposed to be z5b hardy.

Your patio greenhouse looks great Sandi especially chock full of plants like it is.
