Just out of curiosity, does anyone deal with Oak Hills Gardens? I have purchased several plants from their website, and gotten good service, but with one exception these have been small plants. So far, I'm happy with the plants and service (and prices), and enjoy the growing tips in their e-mails. I see they attend most of the East coast shows, so I'm sure some of you have seen them. I haven't seen any posts about purchases from them on this site, and that has made me curious. I'd like to hear any feedback.

I'm sure I have some orchids from there and some that I have bought from others with Oak Hill labels. They are a long standing nursery in the Chicago area.
I just got their newsletter too. I often like and read the articles! here's one for May. If you scroll down they have wonderful info on growing outdoors for summer. http://conta.cc/jvXIaA

Carol, lots of my Orchids came from Oak Hill. I always buy from then at shows and Orchid fests, I also have received some very nice plants as presents from a friend and I have visited their greenhouses a few years ago. Their plants are usually not huge, but they are healthy.

Thank you, that has been my experience too. I was impressed when i ordered something , on line, and she called me the next day to say they were outy of stock, but offered me a similar plant , in a larger pot, for the same price. Not being a conisure, I accepted!

I've bought from Oak Hill both online and at some shows. I've always been satisfied with their plants. Most of their stuff is seed grown, so it's on the small side. I have no problem buying something young for less money and nurturing it to blooming size.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I'll never get to see them at a show, so I'm glad to hear from those that have. Thumbs up

My absolute favorite place to purchase Orchids is a Lady by the name of Marni Turkel. New as I am to growing Orchids I ordered a mounted Pleuro niveo-globula from her on ebay because I loved the way it looked. After it arrived I was having problems right away. The plant looked drastically different after the first night. Marni returned my please HELP call right away. She explained in detail what I was doing wrong. She also followed up with the email below:

Hi,

It is New Zealand sphagnum moss that you should use. It will be hard to find a small amount on line, so I am putting an envelope in the mail tomorrow with more than enough to do this plant. Soak the moss in water until if plumps up. Squeeze out most of the moisture so it doesn't drip and then fluff it up. Wrap it around the bottom of the wood mount so it just comes up to the base of the plant where there is already a little pad of moss and set it in a pot. Put in enough more moss around it to fill the pot, but don't stuff it in hard. Just enough to make the mount stand up. You want to keep the air spaces in the moss. Also, don't use a really big pot, 2.25 to 2.5 should be big enough. Don't try to get all of that moss in there.

Good luck,

Marni

After having specific instructions on how to treat the plant until the moss arrived, I only lost one leaf and the bloom the rest of the plant looks great. Today the moss arrived. I have high hopes for the survival of this plant.

Kathy, at the moment I have limited computer time, but slowly I am finding my way around the forum.
