@ShadyGreenThumb it's a Louisiana iris certainly. 'Black Gamecock' is a cultivar name and is an older model which is known for it's plant strength and has been widely grown over the U.S. A tough one. Whether this cultivar is 'BC' or not I can't be sure. I grew it for a while, but when the drought settled in it went away along with the other Louisiana iris. I had shared with others, including my brother-in-law in Houston, who have more hospitable growing conditions for it and they still have it growing and thriving. If you check the database here you'll see why it was my guess, but it's still just a guess. Louisiana Iris (Iris 'Black Gamecock')

I checked, Donald @needrain and compared pics side by side. Other than slight color variances, the pictures I found were identical. 'Black Gamecock' it is...terrible name btw. LOL I hate the thought of a gamecock. When mine start to multiply I will gladly share and you can try again??

@ShadyGreenThumb Maybe a trade. For one of the pseudata iris I have growing in the stock tanks, maybe. They are looking really good right now - and look to be getting crowded :). Photo was from last year, but they've exceeded this growth already this year. If nothing happens between now and bloom, they should look really good this year.

You got a deal @needrain Donald! Those blooms are eye catching. I also have a lot of these others I can give you. Maybe you know the name? the Giver just told me "Bog Iris", again. I have them in ground in 2 places and in the pond. They are long gone now , being early bloomers. They are the orange/rust ones in the photo.

Louisiana iris also. In this case it may be the species I. fulva. I love that one. They used to have a large patch of that growing at the Dallas Arboretum. It was pretty spectacular when it bloomed. There are similar cultivars to it using it in hybridization and a couple of selected cultivars that have been given names. At a minimum, though, it is a derivative of I. species. From the database but maybe check out Google images as well.

*Blush* LA iris are really good plants for your area. They love the climate. They will also grow in ground in beds. Quite often some will grow fast and 'walk'. They often need to be confined somehow or they will move into their neighbors spots. Planting a couple of different ones too close and then forgetting them too long can result in mixed up plants which are hard to un-mix. Wonderful colors and patterns in the blooms. Until the major drought hit, they grew here quite well and managed the normal dry periods with minimal supplemental water. Even that minimum was not feasible when the drought lasted and water supplies ran very low. Like all the irids, unfortunately they were a favorite of the differential grasshopper.

You guys have come up with two I had never seen. Very cool plants... I love those blooms. Sadly Iris are a short time bloomer but I love them. Thanks for showing the photos and the IDs!

Not a lot of blooming going on around here except for my oakleaf hydrangea which is spectacular. Most things are still greening up and I know hope there'll be many blooms to follow.

My Mirage Autumn Sage is starting to bloom. It appears to be the pink one but given my labeling can't be sure.

Augusta Duelberg has been blooming for weeks. And for weeks I've been trying to get a picture of it by it's lonesome. Since this is too daunting a task, just squint and ignore everything else.

The 2 salvia greggii that are on either end of the perennial bed continue to add blooms but still have more to come.

So now for one of my 'greening up' plants. Every spring I worry about my Flame Acanthus. Then it slowly spits out a few tiny leaves. And now it's going faster.

First picture taken on 4/17.

And then on 4/23.

Sure would like to find a place to put it in the ground. It started as a stick in a styrofoam cup one fall. And then it grew.

@Bubbles, Sandi, Love your Mock Orange. I bought one last year and did not do well I truly believed it died but keep on watering. Now it is starting to produce a few leaves I sure hope it makes it. The smell is just wonderful. Any hints on growing they this one is half sun and half shade.. Thanks for any advice.

@Txtea Mine came to me about 12 years ago in a group of cuttings from MS. I dont do anything special. Its at the back corner of our backyard. Maybe all the rain we've had lately has sparked it into climbing. If yours doesn't thrive, I can send you a cutting or three. Mine gets morning sun. I will have to look to see if it gets much afternoon sun. Our yard slopes in that corner.

@Bubbles, Thank you so much for the offer, but let me see if this one is going to improve this year. If not I will take you up on your kind offer. I first saw this plant about 25 or 30 years ago and never got the aroma out of my head. Last year I found one and bought it hopping. So we will see. Thank you once again.

I always hate to cut back my mums in July. They seem to bloom from spring into summer. But this cheapo one from Aldi is growing fast and getting tall.
