Pink Double Knock Out is very pretty, Gigi. I'd be happy with a little hedge of those bushes.

Oh, Sharon! Now I want a row of Pink Kale too. Big Grin

There's a seafood restaurant here on the river, Zuzu. They have two huge round wooden planters on each side of the entrance, each maybe 4' feet across, 3' tall, and during winter they fill it full of various brassicas and edge it with pink kale. Beautiful color variation.

I've seen some impressive edible landscaping at restaurants around here too, Sharon. I admire business owners who care about details.

Sharon, I have planted these a couple of times. Great winter color! Check out this video!

Thanks Sharon! I already grow the purple kale, I'll have to add some pink! I'll have a little more room for plants in my new place.

I saw a impressive sunny yellow knockout rose bush yesterday. I have to go back down that road and get a pic. It is about 6' high and 5' wide. Covered in yellow and the faded white color that it does as the flower ages it was gorgeous. It was covered in blooms you almost could not see the leaves.

That has made me rethink where I have mine planted. Somehow I did not think they got that big.

I'll see if I have a pic of my Blushing Knock Out.

Two and 3 years old.
We've only lived here 4 years. I'm working on a parade to post....wish I knew where to find my "before" photos. There was nothing here before.
Keep in mind I don't spray or fertilize. That's the power of fabulous native soil! I was so scared I was going to lose everything last summer in all that heat since I didn't water that part of the yard. (where the yellow roses are)
I think what happened is, they all just put deeper roots down and now they are invincible!

Oh...those roses were all bagged roses! Cheapies from Lowes! But those bags had some long healthy roots in them.

My neighbor is a novice gardener. Her favorite plant in my garden is the Carefree Celebration coral Radler rose. She bought an azalea at Kmart because she thought it was the same plant but was disappointed that it stopped blooming.

I told her to look for the knockout roses at the Foruth of July sales. I think she would like a double hot pink one. Last year, they were marked down to $5 everywhere after the Fourth of July. She wants cheerful, colorful perennial plants around her patio and she is on a tight budget. When you are starting to garden it is encouraging to have your first plants survive and look nice.

She has offered to help me move and plant some of my plants. we are going to start with the hostas (because I know where they go and they are easy to plant).

I have shared some hostas and other perennials with her and with other neighbors/friends. That is one of the most fun parts of gardening.

Gigi, I have never seen Sunny Yellow in the big box stores. I was at lowes today and they have so many red and pink for 25.00 but no yellow. I wondered why they do not order any of the yellow.

I picked mine up at my local nursery last year at the end of the season for 5.00.

I got mine from http://www.greatgardenplants.c... I had to get them to replace a half dead plant, then it came back and I ended up with two. LOL. They did not do well here for some reason. I got fed up with the lack of blooms and gave it away.

Susan is it just kockouts that did bad or just Sunny?`

I have noticed is Sunny seems to look its best with age. The bigger ones I have seen like Cindi above look awesome. I think this is one that gets better with age and size. I cannot confirm that because I have only grown Sunny. I do not have any experience with the reds and pinks.

Cinta, thank you. Yes they do get better with age. I can't remember if I have cut my yellow ones back or not, but they are much fuller now than they were at first. Literally they produce blooms all summer, clear into October. To me, they look like yellow butterflies dancing. i have yellow and purple echinaceas in that same bed, nepetas, salvia, coreopsis, helianthus, rudbeckia, and baptisia-both yellow and purple, and 8' tall grasses, so the butterflies do swarm that area.
The double pinks are lovely on their own, but I have tried planting pink profusion zinnias and pink vinca in front of them. This year I'm trying a pink and white purslane and some stachys 'Pink cotton Candy'. We'll see how that works.
With the red, I have dark blue and purple clematis, and stargazer lilies right in the middle of them. In one area, purple chives invaded, and I let them stay. I might try planting some dark velvety purple wave petunias underneath. Red and white dianthus look great in front of the red roses, also.
One commercial planting in town has Karl Foerster grass behind red Knock Outs, and that's a beautiful, low-maintenance combination.
