I no longer have FG, it has been gone for years so it is hard to verify exactly how it looks. But it doesn't have a wide band, I can say that. Its children had bands of all widths.

I think the term for standards turned to falls is just six falls, I haven't come across anything more technical. When I get some time I will write up a little thing about all the different patterns in Japanese irises.

So, this one is the real one?

Susan, I really can't vouch for the photo from Heronswood but it is similar. Heronswood was bought out by Burpee and I am sure they are not Japanese iris experts. I looked around at the specialty grower/hybridizer sites and don't see it currently available at any of them.

I reckon I can cough up a few more photos then say sayonara to Japanese iris season 2012. Though I have to admit Chiyo no Haru is still going strong with one to two branches per stalk.

Japanese Harmony; things get a bit crowded when you are down to the last buds so sometimes the falls are scrunched up against an old bloom:

I've been watching the progression of Dramatic Pattern and noted the change in coloring as the blooms age. The lightening up occurs before the blooms wilt. It is almost like getting two different irises for the price of one:

One more of Etcha Sketch, so pretty:

And this is one of those that are sold in garden centers under a few different names and not registered. Jodlesong aka Jodie's Song and the name on it when I purchased it was Activity. This is an example of a lightly marbled or splashed color form:

Very pretty, I really like the strawberry purple color. I did not order many whites but I do like the Japanese Harmony. Green Grin!

Susan I haven't measured it but it's not much less than Lion King. I'd guess over 42" tall. I'll measure and report back.

Connie, your Dramatic Pattern pics explain some of the images I've seen which I had chalked up to different environment. Thanks. All of the blooms you show are so nice.

Heronswood was just sold again. I don't know who owns it now, but I wouldn't trust to buy something from there.

I snooped around on the internet... it was sold on a sealed bid auction. It looks like it is in the best hands one could hope for under the circumstances in this commercial world:

That's right, I did hear it was sold to a tribe. Yes, I bet they will take care of the plants. I always wished I had visited the place. I was able to purchase things from there and had email conversations with Dan Hinkley. I truly admired him.

Had you ever visited, Pard?

Nope, never been there. The Little and Lewis garden on Bainbridge Island is also spectacular. They do garden sculptures but built a garden around that profession. I have heard they have downsized to a smaller property. I know about them mainly because of a Timberpress book I purchased, A Garden Gallery. So many great ideas from all of these garden books I have, so little time to act on them!

Back in the day (so to speak) Heronswood was a prime topic in the upscale gardening magazines.

Heronswood is on land that was once occupied by this tribe (S'Kallup, I believe). It will be interesting to see what comes from this (hopefully not a casino!!!).

Heavens, no, not another casino. We have way too many around, and they are always packed. We go about twice a year, and last time I lost .10. Penny slots. Russ made 10.00, so that was OK, and we did have a great buffet.

I guess it is ok if a line is drawn before you leave your driveway. I've only done it once and that was in Reno and nickel machines. The biggest attraction for me was just being with friends Smiling . (They were egging me on and it all got a bit crazy!)
