I just got a L. purpurata var. carnea in the mail. It had just finished blooming 5 flowers. It was bare root but had quite a bit of sphagnum in the roots that I teased out. I decided to put it in a large square plastic basket with some coconut husk to hold it in place since I water daily anyway. I'm hoping that new roots grow through the holes of the basket and that I can attach wires to the basket and hang it in winter. How do others grow this plant?

I would think that should work now, depending on the size. It will get very large down the road and heavy, but you can always adjust then.
I would keep it sunny/ along with Cattleyas in bright conditions. Good air movement is essential.
Moving it in Spring outside a few weeks earlier than the other Orchids seemed to promote a nice blooming season for me.

I think I need another one....

Thanks, Ursula. It's pretty tall already. What do you do when they get big?

I had it in a light- weight pot and here it is sitting in a stand to stabilize it. It is the one in the beige pot with lace wrapped around the plant to contain it.
I would simply have a tall growing large Cattleya in mind growing this one.
My Laelia purpurata 'Delicata' is a much smaller plant and it is growing in a slatted wooden basket, have to see how that goes.

Kathy, they are many way to pot it up. I took my large Schomburgkia superbiens off the mount this Spring and placed it into a good size clay pot - bare root. It is starting to attaching new roots to the that.
Another smaller piece is hanging in a pot as you described for your Laelia.

And a close up of the monster plastic basket. It is shallow. Do you think the roots will grow through it?

Yes laelias have long leaves hey. I have mine in a normal shallow orchid pot and its neally ready to repot. Grows fast and vigorous, lots of roots. I'd say it won't take long for roots to grow through your basket boojum.
