Oh Oh, This is bad. I found this thread because it said 'chicken people'. Last time I started hanging out on a chicken thread was at Daves Garden afew years ago and it caused me to buy two incubators and hatch chicken eggs. This was in the middle of winter so I had chicks inside. I sure did enjoy having those chickens. But chicken keeping is illegal in our town so I eventually faced the fact that I could not build a chicken coop and keep them. Rather I gave them to an a friend of a friend out East.

I have resisted the looking at the Farm forum because I was afraid that I would read the chicken threads and then go out and buy more chicken eggs to hatch.

I think it is so unfair that I can not legally keep afew hens. I would keep them clean and tale care of them. I am sure they would not smell to upset the neighbors. But not legal here and not willing to break the law. I can just imagine the chicken police coming to get me. Crying

Skiekitty and I are about the only ones posting about chickens on this forum. I have a farm, but she raises a few chickens in the suburbs. The folks on Daves Garden had all sorts of plans for "stealth" coops to suit your situation... but the law is the law.

I have seen the Stealth coops. But I have a ton of neighbors and I just know someone would report me. I just don't want to keep something that is against the law even if the law is really stupid!

Sometimes, especially with the push for sustainability, lawmakers will reconsider. Bend someone's ear or join a group of local urban gardeners who may also be interested in a few backyard chickens. You may be surprised what you might accomplish!

I know people have changed the law in other places and have gotten urban chickens legal. I agree with the no roosters in urban areas and I guess they do need to set a limit. But I have no energy left for causes. All I can manage at this stage in my old age is too take care of my own garden.

I just found this forum and have added it to my watch list. I live on acreage in a rural area, but don't actively farm. Just got back into chickens, and have posted a couple questions on a separate thread. Rita, you can just enjoy the little peepers vicariously.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

Yep, I think I will just hang out on this forum. Already saw your new post and clicked the 'watch this' button. Interested in your chicken adventures. And I added the Farm Forum to my watch list today.

Hi chicken people.

I haven't spent much time over here but love talking about my chickens. Hilarious! Wanted chickens for so long (for the fresh eggs) and finally got some for my 50th Bday, they are so much more enjoyable than I could have imagined.

And Rita has threads for her tomato/vegetables, plus the garden as a whole. Lovely, lovely photos.

Thank you all for the welcome to the Farm forum. I do have lots of flowers and veggies. Just no chickens and certainly no farm animals. Hilarious!

I remember some of you guys that are here at the Farm Forum from Daves Farm and Chicken Forum. Haven't been there in years.

I am sure my fantasy of a farm living would clash with reality. My vision is lots of land so I could spread out and grow all the veggies that I think of. With a quaint cottage were I have flower gardens all around the house. In the pasture is a cow and horse grazing. There is a large pen with two goats and chickens run free around the land.

But I certainly can't imaging getting up and milking and feeding the cows while it is still dark. And having to mow the pastures. And dealing with deer or chicken killers. Fantasy would clash with reality.

You need to add the likelihood that the cow has pushed down the fence and she and the horse are headed for the highway. The goats have shimmied under their fence and are now dining on your favorite flowers, those the chickens haven't already scratched up, that is, and the escapees will all trample the veggies repeatedly while you are trying to put them back where they belong. Other than that your image is pretty accurate...

Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Porkpal, you must speak from experience.

Rita, I was reading your post, thinking how nice your fantasy was... I have similar ideas of a cow and a goat or two! Then here comes Porkpal with reality. Hilarious!
