Dear Ariene, please see here how to do roast parsnips! http://cubits.org/Neil/thread/...
If you fry Duck breasts in a dry frying pan skin down first, the fat will drain and the skin will go crispy, easy to do!
Butter a Turkey, what a waste of butter. Surely Turkeys are a genetic failure in that you have to put butter in them ro make them moist or they taste like sawdust!
Yuck, whatever next.
Regards.
Neil.

I use a large hypodermic needle and inject melted butter and herbs into the meat of the turkey. Of course I'm talking home grown turkey's! Did one on the grill a couple of weeks ago. Very moist and tastey. I stuffed it with fresh sage leaves, onions and lemon slices. Sprinkled French Terragon on top and cooked it on the grill. I lightly smoked it with some hickory for the last 15 minutes.

Neil, I like to fry duck breasts like you mentioned, but like them fried in Olive oil,and I like them a bit pink in the middle.

By the way, I think Parsnips are among my favorite root veggie. I like to keep them in the ground over winter, and harvest them in the spring as soon as the ground thaws. They are much sweeter that way. I like them roasted best. I'll bet they would be tasty in goose fat.

I remember my dad growing them and leaving them over winter. My mother fried them or boiled them (ugh!). I grew them last year and let them stay in the ground all winter then we pulled them with beets, turnips, carrots and added onion, potatoes and sweet potatoes and roasted. OMG! It was so good I wished I had planted more. They didn't germinate for me this year. I may order more seeds and see what happens. I know they take a long time to grow.

Dear Ariene, I totally agree with you they are delicious! You can make what we call parsnip chips by using a potato peeler. You simply peel them fine and deep fat fry them quickly, lovely with game birds.
I do have a lot of recipes and a recipe Database at http://cubits.org/Neil/forums/...
Of course not all of it is British.
We call cookies biscuits, and shortbread which is Scottish is wonderful and easy to make. Scones are great with strawberry jam (jelly), and cream with a cup of tea. We call it Afternoon cream tea or high tea and is normally served at 3:00PM.
And thou the village clock strikes ten to three is there honey and jam left for tea!
Most kindest regards from a very hot England.
Neil.

porkpal, do you know what this is in a medieval church which was built in 1220 -1230 A.D.? Although the 1220 church was built on a Saxon church remains and is in the Domesday book of 1086 A.D.
Although of course the Saxon church was older than 1086 A.D. This is in east Sussex and the picture was taken by me.
Guesses please to me.

My first thought was a hospital gurney (or trolley) which of course did not yet exist so I'll add my vote to Tom's.

Dear porkpal, yes you are right in some ways! It is very old and was used to transport animals between farms! Especially chickens, in cages, to be released. As well as other Church duties!
Oh what fun, eh!
Regards.

Dear porkpal it is a coffin bearer for the graveyard and indeed is still used for that purpose. It also transports animals as there is no way up the public medieval footpath with a 4X4 as it is too narrow. and steep So that it is how they do it!
Regards from rural England.
Neil.
p.s. A 14th (early 1300s) century, stained glass window in the church that coffin and everything bearer is in.

It looks like the top part could be lifted off the wheels and set down as it has handles the fold down. Quite nifty!

Attention all chicken people! Where do you order your chickens? I have always ordered from Ideal, and like most hatcheries they guarantee 90% accuracy in pullet sexing. Well, in my experience, they may as well promise 10% roosters! Out of each 25 "pullet" chicks that I add each year, I have always received two roosters. Do you know a hatchery that has more reliable chick sexing? (Sex-linked hybrids don't count.) - Or do you think they do it on purpose?
Lurkers and smirkers feel free to chime in as well.
