I got this at the state fair and there wasn't a tag. I'm considering mounting it but I'd like to know what kind it is to see what it likes. Right now it is in medium light (no direct sun), potted in what looks like coconut chunks and lava rock, sitting over an inside pond. I've been looking for this picture because it was blooming when I bought it in November but not now.

It's probably Encyclia cochleata. Or a hybrid of it.

Yes it is. Mine's been blooming for a month. It has also bloomed again in late Spring/early Summer. It's in a wooden basket and, when outdoors, gets several hours of sun until morning. They grow quickly! The flowers open successively so they stay in bloom for a long time. It's been reclassified to Prosthecea and now called Prosthecea cochleata though the old name is still used.

Thank you! It looks like I can mount it without a problem but I may be in too warm an area for it. If it makes it through the summer then it should be OK.

Jonna, according to Andy's orchids , if it is Encyclia radiata, it is temp. tolerant. I have thought about buying one, but if I recall correctly, it needs more humidity than I can provide. Most orchids adapt to the temps. pretty well.

This one is incredibly hardy. I'll have to show you mine sometime-the roots are everywhere and it bloomed all year!! Started last spring and there are still a few flowers left.

That would be great if it bloomed all year. I'm just hoping it sends out another shoot now. There is a new leaf growing so that's good.

Humidity, I've got that :)
