You may recall the bagged rose I bought at Home Depot that was supposed to be Picante. The first flush of blooms was white with just a trace of pink, and I thought it might be Lady of the Dawn. The second flush was bright pink with a little bit of white on the reverse, so I was almost convinced that it was Brilliant Pink Iceberg. The third and fourth flushes have looked like this:

I have no idea what this rose could be. It's not growing anywhere else in my garden. Please help me ID it. It's a bright magenta-pink with a pale yellow reverse. The blooms are clustered, so it might be a floribunda or a shrub. The blooms are semi-double and about 3 inches across, maybe 4. It can't be anything exotic because it has to have been grown by the same people that supply Home Depot with Picante.

That's what my Mardi Gras looks like when it starts to fade out. Definitely not Picante though. What company was the body bag?

You didn't mention a scent, Zuzu, so I expect it's scentless?

I don't know about the scent, Chelle. I never tried to smell it. Next time it blooms, I'll find out.

My Mardi Gras fades out to those colors too, Toni, but this one starts out that way. This one has about half as many petals as Mardi Gras and is a much shorter rose bush. Mardi Gras is now about 6 feet tall.

As for the company. who knows? This was probably two years ago and it was when Home Depot had a good variety of patented and non-patented bare-root roses in body bags at various prices (they don't anymore, at least not here). I'm sure this was one of the lower-priced ones: I bought it strictly because I didn't already have the rose and not because I really wanted the rose.

Zuzu - My Mardi Gras only gets to be about 3-4', but I have to chop off the winterkill to about 6" off the ground. I have no idea what it is, but I do like it! It's very very pretty!

Zuzu, every single one that I've thought might be your plant (and I've checked a few ) already has at least one image of yours in the DB. I keep thinking, "oh, this is it (!) ", then I find out that you already have/know it.

Three years ago I bought floribunda Bolivar from Edmunds and it featured yellow and magenta blossoms. Both colors were stronger, so I cannot say this rose looks much like that one. There are moments when some of the blossoms of Rainbow Sorbet look a bit like this rose, but there are so many other color variations to it ... Also I know that if it were RS, you wouldn't have any question about its ID.

Coming from Home Depot, it must be a fairly popular rose. So what popular rose have you avoided buying, Zuzu?

Well, we know I had avoided Picante up to that point, Porkpie.

You know, the whole thing was a comedy of errors. Sue and I were buying roses at a lot of places that day. After a while, the names starting running together. One of the other roses I bought at Home Depot that day was Pinata, a nice orange and yellow climber that had fallen victim to the gophers here and had to be replaced. When we saw Picante a few minutes later, we misread the name and thought it was a non-climbing Pinata, which certainly sounded exciting. That's why I bought the rose. Later Sue and I realized it was not Pinata at all, but a solid orange rose that didn't look very exciting. I'm actually glad it turned out to be mislabeled, but I'd like to know its name.

Steve, focus on something paler. The colors of this one are never as vibrant as the colors of Bolivar and Rainbow Sorbet.

The only other bloom in my garden that looks like the mystery rose is Reveil Dijonnais, but I had so much trouble finding that one that I can't believe a Home Depot supplier is growing it. I bought it from Vintage and it promptly died. I bought it from Rogue Valley and it was mislabeled, as half of their roses are. I finally bought a viable one from Roses Unlimited, and even it has a paler bloom than the ones I see on HMF. Besides, the mystery rose has no tendency to climb. It's pretty, all right. I just lost interest in solid-colored hybrid teas a few years ago. I already have dozens in every color and I really prefer the blends or the ones with a contrasting reverse or contrasting edges.

I've actually had people stop by my house, which is not on the beaten path, and get out & oogle my roses. Embarrasses the crap outta me.

I have stopped and told people how much I enjoy driving by their gardens. You should be flattered, not embarrassed.
We had a business on a busy highway near a big intersection, and I landscaped it with cannas and daylilies and other really gaudy plants. When we moved the business, I dug up some of the plants and left the rest. People came in and asked if they could dig, and some stopped to tell me how sad they were that we were moving.
I was always embarrassed when people honked when I was out there weeding. Don't know if it was because my butt was up in the air or if they knew me or what.

Zuzu, two years ago Home Depot had a wonderful collection of heavily scented old garden roses. I remember a thread about it on gardenweb, but I can't find it now. I remember they had Sombreuil, (sp?) because everyone who got it complained that it wasn't the real one. Reine des Violettes and Comte de Chambord were in the collection. Does that ring any bells?

These newest pink blooms instantly reminded me of Lovestruck, which of course i know you already have, but it's that bit of streaking that made me think of it. Plus it also does a lot of color changes.

I have Reine des Violettes. It looks just like The Prince -- dark purple with quartered blooms of 50 or 60 petals. Comte de Chambord also has quartered blooms with about 50 petals. This NOID rose of mine has no more than 10 or 12 petals. The colors are modern too. It's either a floribunda or a shrub rose.

Sue, that's a good guess. Lovestruck is one of my favorite roses. I have two of them, in fact. I did think it was Lovestruck on one of its earlier flushes, but now it's settled into a darker shade of pink, more like a fuchsia, and it doesn't have as many petals as Lovestruck.

Picante is carried by Certified Roses, so I looked through their 2010 catalog and found a possible ID, but it would be a miracle. Certified also carried Little Gigi that year.

I've ordered Little Gigi three times. Hortico sent me a solid yellow rose. When I informed them that they had sent me the wrong rose, they sent me a replacement -- a white climber, which appears to be Iceberg. I then ordered Little Gigi from Cliff, but I told him my Hortico story and he said his is solid yellow from Hortico also, so I passed. I've wanted this rose for a long time, but I never ran across it at Home Depot under its real name. I suspect this rose they labeled Picante is a genuine Little Gigi.

Zuzu, it sounds as if Little Gigi is a rose with a romantic streak, meant to find you only when you give up and stop looking.
Lovestruck is one of my favorites also. I have 3 of them, and i giggle every time I walk by them. I can't help but read the nametag as "Loves Truck" and I think of my husband. I tell him the pretty rose is for him but he doesn't quite see the humor.
