I want to collect a riot of coleus and I know that I will need to overwinter in the house in order to replant next year. I know you can just grow in water but this takes up a lot of window sill space. I am thinking I could put in a small container of water and put all the pots in a kind of tiered hanging basket. I would gradually add soil to the rooting cuttings, and make a hole in the bottom of the pot for drainage. Sound like a plan?

Never liked the water method myself.. seemed the water got yucky quickly.. and didn't save me much time compared to watering.. and it is hard to get them to transition.. but adding water gels to the mix when you do will help .. do what works for you .. always worth a shot .. the one year I kept some in water.. and made new cuttings in mix when I was ready

I do best planting small cuttings directly in soil in 3" pots sometime in Sept. I let them set outside for a few weeks and they seem to root well during that time, then bring them inside before it gets too cold. Sometimes I take cuttings of the cuttings as winter goes along. I do not use lights inside, just set flats of them in front of a South facing window. Always lose a few over the winter, mostly due to my poor watering, but get enough to keep me going most years. Have never done well with the water rooting method.

Does seem like a more solid transition.. less problems that way . . At least for me
