Daniel, I too will be haunting the garden looking for ripened seed pods.

The reason I asked was because I'm just now putting sprinklers in the beds. The beauties are loaded with buds! I don't want them dropping any of them, and, later, any seed pods. Can that happen from lack of water?

Either the heat or drought has caused some of my pods and buds to drop. Water is the biggest factor I think.
I'm running thin on sprinklers myself though Sticking tongue out I have 6 spread across my potted plants on top of 14 ft tall 4x4s. The potted plants dry out so quickly I have to run them every single day. Thank God for the 2 & 4 outlet water timers at Lowe's. They have been a life saver but my in ground plants mainly depend on rain to get watered and I think that's why I'm dropping a few pods.

Daniel, I would freak out! That's as bad as the critters getting them! After all your hard work ! Crying Grumbling Crying

I went out this morning intent on pulling weeds. Got a good look at some of the pinched looking clumps, and decided to play with hoses and sprinklers. Finally got something arranged. I'm behind on everything this year! Good thing is, I'm sitting in here where it's air conditioned, only go out there every half hour to move the hoses!

Good luck Mary. Every pod that set this year aborted here. Our May was extremely dry.

Daniel, I think I mentioned that I had one pod that just might make it. Something damaged the scape and it was bent to the ground and believed to be broken. When I stood it up, it was still hanging on by threads. Today the scape pulled free from the clump. I opened the pod anyway and found 6 seed that seem ripe and firm. Crossing Fingers! they're viable.

Just in case some of you do have some pods broken off. I had three on a scape that broke off and I did what others on here recommend and put it in water and added a little miracle grow. All three pods finally matured and cracked open, with lovely seeds inside. Then I broke off a green pod, mature looking in size, but a long way from opening. I kept it on my work bench for at least two weeks (wish I had written the date down) and also wish I knew how old the pod actually was. Any how, that pod turned very dark, almost black (no water or anything just the pod laying on my bench) so I cracked the pod open and it had some of the nicest shiny black seeds inside. I did mark them as (green pod seeds) and will try to keep track of them and see if they actually finally germinate.

Mary no matter what way you loose a pod it's frustrating but Pods dropping doesn't bother me as bad as the deer. Some pods aborting can be expected every year. It's those unexpected things that will make you want to scream.

Wow Stan are those the parents? Should make some lovely seedlings Lovey dubby

Larry I did the same thing last year or the year before minus the MG but the pod did indeed ripen mine was about 10 days or something. Now if I find a broke pod I toss it in the woods. Same thing if I see a pod without a tag, I pick it and pitch it.

Y'all remeber that fused scape I showed about a week or 2 ago. Here it is after finishing up.

If anyone wants that bee pod they can have it. I'm just going to chunk it.

Thank you, Stan. I'm so sorry that your crosses didn't make it. I hope you get lucky with the broken scape seeds. Those are beautiful parents!

Larry, can't wait to hear if your "black pod" seeds are viable! Fascinating stuff!

Daniel, wow, that looks like the Hydra!

Tried to upload a couple more pics, but no luck. Crying

Mort Morrs says pink is a clarifier along with a few other hybridizers. If lavenders are a clarifier also that's awsome because I love all the new orchiad and lavander colored flowers being put out. I can say pink will clear up a splotchy red in my experence but getting into 2nd and 3rd gen kids is still all new to me so I still have a lot to learn.
Right now like most other backyard hybridizers its hard for me to turn down using that new flower instead zoning in on details. I'm trying to get better but when the tet RFK kids bloomed all rules went out the window Sticking tongue out Like Frank's red hot I put that shhh on everything. Rolling on the floor laughing

Stan - So sorry to read all your crosses aborted. That is so disappointing.

Daniel - I always have some bud drop once the temps start climbing past 93 degrees.

Avedon - The bloom is a wow flower. Have you tried crossing it with a plant with stronger scapes?

Today it was evident we are past peak bloom. I think I like this late season we had this year. I have never seen our season so late or going so strong into July. But it is July and now temp forecasts have mid and upper 90's and hints of turning really hot and dry.
A few late seedlings are just starting to bloom and I wanted to call it a season for hybridizing but it will not be easy to stop now that I have some new blooms.
I make so many crosses that I usually say there will be more than enough seeds no matter what happens. It is a matter of how many we can plant and take care of.
I harvested first seeds today. A couple pods from sibling seedlings and typical of my crossing for this year. I have focused on my seedlings and most crosses will be seedling crosses.
I always forget what I did until I harvest pods and check tags (if I got it marked).
The first pods were marked.

Thanks for the comments all, it was unusually dry here in May with almost zero rainfall and the hot temps didn't help. To make up the loss, I started some seed that have been occupying space in my fridge.

Daniel, I think Fred was one who mentioned to me, that the lavenders clear up the whites blooms. We know how wonderful Fred's white Daylily's crosses are. I looks forward to seeing these two. Those two are seedlings by the way. Came to be mine, compliments of Buddy Hall.

Debra, and all, glad you liked DD/T#5. I am not doing any more crosses, so this is it. I believe there are about ten or so plants of the original sixty seeds that were planted, and next year, that number may go down, so the survivors better get busy and shape up! nodding
