That's a really beautiful little tropical oasis you've got going, Holly. Great deal on the Musa at a swap!

Better get your cannas in the ground pretty soon, so they can make some leaves and new rhizomes before fall! Should keep them alive for you for next year. I found a bunch that looked like they'd died, but I set them in a bucket of water, and forgot about them. Jumped right up with leaves and one even bloomed in the bucket!

Yes, I should but I'm not sure I will I have been thinking of just telling my son to set them out on his sidewalk with a free sign on them.. We dug up way too many last year, Most of these came from the school where my daughter teaches and grandchildren go. A few years ago a neighbor of the school gave them some cannas and we volunteered to dig them up and store them for the winter and then replant them come spring. We have done that the last two years and now there are just way too many. I mentioned taking them to the school and seeing if any of the parents wanted them but there was just too much going on and no one else was interested in doing anything with them.

Holly, were you planning on brining the unplanted cannas down to the fall swap? I will gladly take them and plant them this fall!

Yes I was thinking about doing that. I brought them out of the basement a few days ago and set them in their trays next to the compost pile. I am going to drop a few into the ground and let them grow till frost and I was wondering if anyone at the swap would like them. Do you let them in the ground all winter in your area?

Most cannas are supposedly hardy to zone 7b, and I'm supposedly 7a, but I have a really warm microclimate in my backyard. Southern full-sun exposure, brick wall, protected from wind, and on a slope so doesn't stay wet.

This is my first year growing cannas (they were from you! Big Grin ) so I was going to leave half in the ground and dig out half to experiment. In my immediate area, everyone I know leaves them in the ground.

I will bring you some. They are the same Red Canna that I gave away at the Spring Swap. Won't hurt to experiment with them a bit. They reproduce pretty quickly so if you loose a few it really won't matter. That is why I have so many. The ones we put in at the school every year produce more than we want to deal with.
