I honestly never saw a Pink Princess before all the hype, wished I had, I'm sure I would have bought one, especially if they can grow outside up a tree in zone 9.

I got one about 8 or 9 yrs ago but it wasn't that exciting. Most of the leaves were just plain and brownish and the occasional pink spot didn't make me swoon or anything. It didn't survive a winter after about 2 or 3 yrs, got too dry.

This is what they are SUPPOSED to look like (more or less)

Its only when the leaves start to come out totally pink or totally green that there is a problem.

These are picks from a year or so ago. I have one growing up through an old tea olive and I just planted a smaller one on a Bradford pear. I know they are outcast trees but it was here when we bought the house, I might as well use it as a trellis. It already has bromeliads that have taken to it nicely.

"Yes you read it right" I thought the next words would be "$12.95 for these tiny weird bulbs that are practically invasive when they're happy? " (I bet they send tiny ones. ) And that I can never get to start right away? Currently waiting though I KNOW they will grow. And Walmart is asking $15.99 for the same 20 bulbs.
Plant it and they will come.

I recently learned that you can grow new ones by just putting a stem with a leaf in water. Roots and eventually a little bulbs will grow from the bottom of the stem in the water. I tried it just for something to do (if you have one plant no one really needs more of these) and it was pretty fun to watch.

I have had this for a good ten years in a pot, I think it prefers the colder weather, it is blooming now, and will look good until about April then kind of shabby in our summer months. The green has popped up in other places in the garden, most likely the squirrels relocated it. The purple not so, probably will do better in your zone Sally. Crossing Fingers!

The purple did very well in my sea island garden in SC, zone 9a, muggy and hot, mucky marsh soil. That one bordered on being invasive.

A few days ago Lukas nursery had two new Philodendron 'Ring of Fire' plants, nice looking plants. Price $699.00 each had maybe six leaves.
I should have taking a picture, if they're still there this week I will.

Absolutely incredible. This whole "rare" plant craze has got to stop somewhere.

Just don't buy plants, that's my solution. And spread the word about scams especially online sellers that describe plants as "rare" when they're easy to grow and propagate and not rare at all.

$700 for a small Philodendron? Outrageous.

If someone is willing to pay, then it's "worth it". There is no such thing as a plant that expensive in my world, but if this is a thing for others, it doesn't affect me. If I had 5 lifetimes, I would still not have the time or space to collect all of the basic species I'd like to have. I don't need 22 versions of a same thing, but if others are into that, it doesn't affect me - unless they will please show some pics and I can enjoy vicariously. : ) I gave up looking for specific plants a long time ago. I just go to see what they have and if there is anything I want at a price I'm willing to pay, I buy it.
