Mmmmm there seem to be several P. Chocolates. A form of verrocusom, another name for Black Cardinal, and erubescens hocolate....sounds like a marketing ploy to me for an already named plant. Would be interested in seeing a photo

I'll get a photo, I was going to go over this afternoon, but the email said this weekend, so I'm going when they open in the morning. I figure they're coming in today and they need to get them out on display.
I'll take photos since they don't cost me anything.

Nothing special in my eyes. Funny a man was working on fixing the door to the greenhouse while I was taking pictures of the plant, he said he was in the wrong business after seeing how much some of the plants were. LOL.

At least the greenhouse is now making good money and able to pay him to fix the door, haha
Plant it and they will come.

Ah its a Philodendron luxurians. Those are pricey right now. The tag 'Chocolate' is a new one on me, that implies a cultivar. This plant is only newly described to science, it was only recently collected and described. I don;t think there are any cultivars....unless this is a TC plant that the TC company has 'selected out' to name this inane name. I have one that I bought from Ecuagenera at a decent price, it was basically a fresh import that they had not acclimated so those are always cheaper than ones they have had for a period of time and gotten growing really well. Luxurians is most closely related to P. gloriosum. This is mine. Plain lux no cocoa added on the bottom, P, gloriosum on the top

Do you mind if I import your photo into my photo program and show it to a friend? We are confused about why this is being labeled as a cultivar and not a natural variety. Especially when it looks no different rom my plain one LOL. Did you happen to notice who is producing it?

Fake cultivars irritate the stuffin' out of me too, Gina. And so many of them are just the common name.

Yeah, it could just be a mistake because they really don;t know, or.....
To be labeled as a cultivar, which this is, the plant has to be a sport mutation or a hybrid whose continued propagation depends on being propagated in some fashion by people. Either by tissue culture, or by vegetative propagation of the original plant. The nomenclature for those is what they have put in that tag....the species, followed by the 'cultivar' in single quotes.
To be a variety, the plant is something that grows from seed, and grows the way it is naturally without the help of people. Every seed will produce whatever mutation that makes it that variety. The proper nomenclature for that is no quotes and 'var' in italics followed by the name.
They are marketing this as a cultivar. If its a cultivar, it has to be different from the regular species. And I just don;t see that.

I was going to say it sure looks a lot like P. Gloriosum to me. A very common, beautiful cultivar. They're messing with success, in my opinion, trying to cash in on the "rare" phenom with this one. Don't fall for it. Grow a Gloriosum instead.

Gloriosum is supposedly easier to grow than luxurians. I am not sure why people believe this, as luxurians has only been available for a short period of time. They behave exactly the same...they like loose chunky soil and they creep.

No, I don't mind. I was there when they were putting the plants out on display in the greenhouse, just a young couple, the tags were being done by an nursery employee. I did hear them just making the prices as they went along putting them out, thought that was strange. Lukas labels never show where the plants originate from.

How could anybody think a plant is worth that much $ unless it cures some kind of disease? Not something I can relate to, but it's interesting as a spectator on the sidelines. I hope nobody thinks any of my plants are so valuable.

This is what one of our local ACE hardwares has resorted to. They have 2 or 3 of these locked cages for the pricey ones. I guess a few walked off and they are taking no chances. What a sad, sorry state of affairs.

Yeah, that's really off the charts! There must be foolish people out there who might consider shelling out that kind of bucks for a plant, I guess. D'Oh! Imagine if it up and died on them? There could be lawsuits, when it comes to people with more bucks than brains.

I was surprised to see some small spotty purple bromeliads in pots at Lowe's the other day for $15 each. That's about double what they used to be, I think. I have dozens of them in my garden, and truly, none have gone missing or anything . . . I mean, a plant that easy to grow and that propagates itself?
