Seems like Lowes has changed their fall sales strategy. In past years they would stop receiving new nursery stock in August and then in mid August they would run sales on the remaining stock. Not so this year. They are still receiving fresh stock, the outdoor register is still open and I do not think they will be having any sales until maybe October. The nearby Walmart and Meijers have already closed their nursery sales, except for fall mums.

My observations are based on stores in SE Michigan. Practices may vary in other locations.

I noticed that at the Lowe's store in Evansville, Indiana this past weekend too. However, some of the plants were annuals that I knew I would not get much time out of. They did have some nice looking perennials!

Haven't been to Lowes but I was looking for small pots of inexpensive mums the other day and went to HD and Meijers. Meijers had practically no plants in the garden center. Just a few really big potted mums that were very pricey. HD had a bit more but still bigger pots for a lot of money. I ended up at Walmart and they had what I needed. Small 4 inch pots of mums for $1.27. Perfect! I needed 15 to fill all my window boxes and didn't want to mortgage my house to do it, lol! I'll have to go check out Lowes and see what they still have!

I found a hood deal on mums at Aldi last year, 3 colors in 6" pots, $1.50 or so. I'll be watching for them again!

I know my Lowes is still receiving new stock. I was surprised last week when I went in there.

Well, you do live in FL. Sticking tongue out

Our Lowes and HD are putting out Mums currently, but I'm not sure about the current stock of perennials (as to if they're getting more in).

I have a few Lowe's and HDs around my area. I usually try to get great deals on the perennial sales end of August - beginning of September time frame but there weren't any there! When I asked the Outdoors and Garden manager she mentioned that they are adapting along with climate changes!

So much for all the great savings! Sighing!

Actually, fall is a great time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials, but I suspect that most people do not plant in the fall. The big box stores probably just follow the money.

I wanted to buy another Azaela for this reason, but Lowes doesn't have any anymore. Sighing!

Next trip down to our cabin in Gause I'm planting 4 crepe myrtles (3 'Pink Velour' and 1 'Catawba' purple) and a red maple, along with 2 red Turk's Cap I rooted that are over a foot tall already. Planting 2 'Delaware Valley White' azaleas here in Temple in my mostly shade side garden. All this is happening just as soon as my husband can dig the holes for me. My back is giving me issues lately (just had a procedure done) and I have to let him do all the hole digging for awhile. We're tentatively planning on doing the azaleas next week. Smiling

Our Lowes here in the southwest corner of Virginia just got in a huge amount of trees, hydrangeas, azaleas, as well as pansies, Autumn sedums, and (strangely) annuals that won't have more than a few weeks until it gets too cold for them. I work at the Walmart next door and we only have mums in all sizes from 62 cents and up, and we usually have a garden center that draws customers away from Lowes, our prices and selection being so good. It helps that our staff out there takes excellent care with watering, keeping shade plants under shade cloth, etc.
Give me land, lots of land, under starry skies above. Don't fence me in.

I was at Lowes this afternoon In Troy Alabama
and they had plants on clearance rack for the last 3 weeks in
Sept...Most are beyond nurturing them back if you bought
them today on Sept 29th.

Many plants are over watered that is what happens
at these store...nurseries..they admit it ..

I saw two Nanho butterfly bushes that were
23.00 each in good shape reduced to 5.00 dollars.
those were today and were green and looked good
I have no idea how due to their over watering..
At these stores the employee waters all plants
drenching them daily whether they are dry loving
like iris or whether they are bee balm that loves
water.

I did not have room for the butterfly bushes and I hated to leave
them there to be over watered in pots and die
at the store today..

So this store is smart they reduced then they
did not receive new perennials after sept
lst this year...

I have stopped buying anything at our local Lowe's because of some of their practices. I don't know if they are local or company wide, but they lost me(and a lot of other local people ) as customers. 1. They reset the garden products. Instead of leaving the products on long aisles, they placed them on the end caps. This resulted in their discontinuing many products, several of which I had purchased on a regular basis. 2. They scaled down their offerings of the plants produced under their name, and chose to stock with Monrovia plants, which, in my opinion, are overpriced and overrated. 3. They do not mark down their plants until they are already clearly dead. Who wants to buy a dead plant? 4. I have tried several times to express my concerns to the store manager, and I was treated as if I was a crazy old lady, or was generally ignored. I do have other places to take my money. Our Wal Mart takes very good care of their plants, they get frequent shipments of plants for the appropriate growing season, and their better homes and gardens plants are high quality and reasonably priced. Our local Kroger's has an excellent selection of plants during the growing season; I have bought many nice plants there. As consumers we vote for our choices with our pocketbook, And my pocketbook sure doesn't vote for Lowe's!

I have 3 "local"stores, they are all about 20 miles away. I have noted that only one of these stores seems to keep plants watered, which includes the plants that go on clearance. So I concluded that some Lowes practices in the garden center are left to the local store manager.

However, my local Walmart and Meijer have a poor selection of plants compared to Lowes. Actually, Manard's has a better selection than Walmart and Meijer as well.

End result, I do most of my plant shopping on line. But, I do enjoy big box shopping for bargains:)

@frankrichards16 I agree the BB is where I find the best bargains so that is where I hang out.

I am going to blast Lowes on facebook about their houseplant selection. They use to have a good selection. They are buying a bunch of cheap common houseplants.

Yes, they are. Another thing that I forgot to mention is that this summer they were selling invasive plants as ground covers; ground ivy, creeping Charlie and periwinkle.
