I have given some thought as well to where these flowers
might go. Haven't come up with an answer, but have my
own goals to aim for. I would like to register some if I ever
think they are 'finished'. Definitely not there yet.

Think the most desirable trait that I want at this point is
hardiness. Many of the ones I have in the garden are
extremely sensitive plants, which require way too much care.
And I do not like having to spray for anything, although
at times it is necessary. Some weeding, clean up, and nutrition are
expected, but sensitive to environment, pests, and disease
is a bit much.

I grow orchids on the lanai (patio to the rest of the world). They are ruffled, delicate, and last a week or 10 days. No rebloom.

My garden is filled with selfs and haloed daylilies. This year those eyed wonders are really calling to me. What the heck??? How'd that happen?

We will see. I divide in Oct or Nov. and then go shopping. It's going to be fun to see what gets added to the garden!

To me the perfect daylily would bloom extra early and rebloom, but so far I haven't had anything like that. I'm not sure if I have a favorite look, but I prefer large blooms. The little ones are really cute, but they aren't my favorite. I also love doubles that are one solid color. Two of my sibling seedlings this year are doubles (one yellow, one light orange) that are kind of small, and I really like them, so maybe I'm learning to love smaller blooms. I also really love gold dust, if that's what it's called. To me, it makes a plain bloom look extra special. I'd love to get a huge, deep pink bloom with a nice yellow edge that isn't so ruffled that it distorts the bloom. That would probably be my idea of perfect.

I also prefer daylilies that are good performers, which means that I can't see myself buying a new introduction. I want to know that others have had good luck with a daylily first. Of course I've seen some new introductions that I would love to have, but I also love Hyperion, and it's ancient! I used Hyperion a lot for hybridizing two years ago, which was my first year, and I've been happy with the results on the babies that it has produced. They may not be anything spectacular, but I got a gorgeous yellow seedling that looks much better than Hyperion, with soft ruffled edges, and it smells fantastic! To me, that's a good flower! I really love seeing the different blooms that hybridizers are coming up with, as far as color combinations, edges, and everything else, but sometimes they look too busy.

I think you'll find as many different opinions on what people like, as there are different daylilies.

Natalie, getting a baby that is better than the parent is what it is
all about. That spells success in your efforts. Congrats on that
accomplishment with Hyperion.

Shirlee, Hyperion is so old that it wouldn't take much to get something better! It's a very simple yellow bloom, but I think it smells better than most other daylilies, which was my only reason for using it. The baby is prettier and smells even better, so I guess I accomplished something! I've got quite a few babies from it, and they are all prettier than it is, but like I said, it doesn't take much to be prettier! At least the good smell was passed along, which was my goal.

Ah, but Hyperion is such a lovely color of yellow.

I keep an old spider yellow, Chester Cyclone, for that very
reason too. It has a heavenly scent that wafts through
the entire garden. This year it was a blooming machine,
and I neglected to capture a photo of it. Wish I had.
Lots of scent this year.

That's a really pretty bloom! Nice to know that it also smells good. I really love flowers that smell good!

Me too, Natalie, and many of the older ones have such a nice scent.
It is hard to describe though, a sweet smell, but unlike anything else
that I can think of.

I was thinking the other day that my seedling smelled a little bit like an iris, but not exactly. I think that an iris is the closest that I can describe it though. I hope the seedling multiplies like crazy so that I can plant it all around my house where my bedroom is. I've got iris there now, and the smell is heavenly! It would be nice to have that wonderful smell floating into the windows when the iris are done blooming.

Natalie, I can just imagine the bedroom windows open,
and climbing into bed at night with the sweet scent of
fragrant daylilies and iris filling the air. Wonderful.

That's exactly what it was like when the iris were in bloom. It was wonderful.
