I never dreamed crocosmia could even get that tall.
My Lucifer has been reliably hip height for all the 6-8 years I've had it, stayed in a neat little clump, and brought me hummingbirds!

I got some Emily McKenzie this spring and will plant it in the front yard came Fall.

Mine could almost be called a thicket Hilarious! ...it's nearly as tall as I am. I had to place it on the north side of my beds, with a grass path between it and the next bed to the north; otherwise, it would shade out the sundrops and phlox.

That's about the description of mine, Chelle. Mine was a good 2 foot taller than I am. But it's in partial shade. That might make a difference.

Years ago I saw a photo of crocosmia growing in native africa. It was as tall as a small tree with a man standing under it.

My yellows are starting to bloom.I'll pix this morning when the sun comes up.I dread this time of year,no daylight until 6:30.

very pretty! I certainly do not want one that is 7 feet or whatever. I bought a few bulbs thinking they got only about 3-4 feet. I think they might be invasive here, I will have to do more research.

agree!! I dug 2 clumps that were here when we moved in.I battled it in my other garden and had to dig half the clump every few years just so it wouldnt take over the visual balance I had achieved in my other garden.
I visit my old neighborhood from time to time and there it is all over the place. New owners arent gardeners I guess.
My old house 6 years ago the clump is under the dogwood.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I do not want to do battle with a plant. I have other things to do. Rolling my eyes.

I really liked them before learning about their potential here, but now? 7'? I'm trying to figure out a good part shade location. Their amazing foliage just cant be beat as a backdrop and I love that blaze of red blooms.

Lucifer here has never gotten over 4 feet here and they've pretty much stayed within a nice defined area. Goodness, I never thought they could get up to 6 feet.

Lucifer here stays in its spot as well - it increases, but not too dramatically. In fact, (and I really just noticed this) Ember Glow is edging into its space.

It's that time; the time when the floppers need to get out of the way of others...even the chunks of wood will only hold them up for just so long. Hilarious! Time to rustle up some empty containers!

Thumb of 2012-08-07/chelle/dd3652

If for no other reason, you could grow them in a sunken container for cutting flowers. I'd bet that if their roots were confined they'd be quite easily manageable; both in height and in maintaining their space. Smiling

Very patriotic, Chelle!

Ours hasn't really run. It's a large clump, but no way would I say invasive. I just moved some today to a full sun location. Let's see how it does. It had about 8 corms in a row on each piece.

I actually love my crocosmias. I have an orange version which thrives for a few years in one spot, and then it dies off. But, I would plant a few corms in another spot, and then it does well there. Mines never get to the point where it is invasive. The ones I have are about 3 feet tall, so they don't tend to flop much. They also multiply mostly by corms, and not too much through a spreading root system. I don't think it is a lucifer.

Here is a photo in the garden and in a vase with some Leonotis leonorus

Two years ago, I bought some yellow ones. I am trying to nurture this clump along so that I can have some dotting other areas of my garden. This is the original clump in it's second year - I dug out about 6-7 corms in early spring around the edges to start a second clump. The height of this one is about 2.5 feet tall - it gets overhead sprinkling and still holds up.

I have never had problem of invasive. I have had trouble keeping it alive even when the deer were not eating it down.
