As a seller, I don't mind suggestions for bonuses, but really prefer to just wing it on my own, since so much of what I give away for free is based on what I have that day. It is not based on a percentage of the purchase...it is a gift freely given. If the buyer chooses not to plant them, I understand.

I would think this is true of bonus plants, as well. If a particular cultivar has been recently dug and divided, and readily available, it might be more apt to be chosen as a bonus than one that is still in the ground!

I disagree with Ken's initial post from the standpoint that I have a different perspective. That does not have to mean that I think I'm right and he's wrong. It can mean that in my opinion I feel he's right but I'm "more right". I can respect someone's position and consider it to be valid and still disagree with it.

It's irrational to expect everyone to agree with you. The follow-up posts to Ken were expressing different perspectives and it is in my opinion irrational for him to find that upsetting. Especially since the posts were reasonable and did not include any attacks or insults.

My opinions on bonus plants and seeds pretty much repeat a lot of what has been already well said.

When I was new to daylilies and just filling up my landscape with them, I was thrilled and even stunned by the bonus plants I received. I will always hold in high regard the hybridizers and nursery owners who were so generous to me!

Over time my landscape has filled and my focus has almost completely shifted to hybridizing. So when I buy now I am very specific. I would much rather have extra fans or seed of what I am buying than something else.

However, I consider bonuses to be completely outside of my expectations, no matter what the seller "promises" or implies about them. I feel that it is very kind of sellers to try and accommodate me by getting a wish list or selecting a bonus for me they think I would like. But I have no expectation for them to do so. If they give me a bonus I like I am thrilled by my good fortune. If they don't I don't really care because I don't have any expectation. Even if I don't get a bonus at all I'm ok with that. I consider bonuses to be "extra" above and beyond the transaction and allow myself no expectations regarding them…

Please no limp sculpted crispy thinger whippings!

I've been pretty lucky where bonus plants are concerned. I remember an order many years ago in which I was at first disappointed with the bonus choices. That is, until they grew! Now I get why they were sent to me..... a dumb newbie at the time who didn't consider ZONES and just ordered the 'pretty faces'. The ones I bought languished and are now gone but the bonuses, selected for a northern cold climate, are flourishing and have become favorites. On the other side of the fence, I once was gifted un-named seedlings which turned out to be total duds and went to sleep in the compost pile. I often wonder why I was sent those because at that time I had zero interest in hybridizing. I don't expect bonuses but I would never be offended if they are sent. Whatever I didn't want were gifted to family members who just wanted some flowers for their yard and didn't care about names or hybridizing. I myself just started selling seeds and I do send bonus packets, plus extra seeds of the purchased cross. I usually ask if the person would like bonuses and if so, ask for suggestions. Daylily growing should always be fun, stress-free, and open to all thoughts and opinions. We are all here because of our love for this beautiful flower and I am glad I joined this place. Group hug

What in the Sam hell is a limp sculpted crisper thingy?!?

And my two cents: Bonuses are welcome, not expected. I might love it. If not, I have a compost heap and family to gift plants to.

Newer posters- disagreements happen- seen it before, I'll see it again. A reminder to all of us: No one on here is posting with the intention of being an (ahem). We have bad days, dumb moments, and can be an opinionated lot.

Still, there's no other forum where I'd rather be, even when I go months without being very active (I swear I'm not cheating on the forum! There's no where else, I promise!).

Can we please let this go? I ask that with utter sincerity and respect.

Everyone is welcome to his or her opinion. However, there's no value to saying that, yet following it up with a litany of reasons why the other person's opinion is less-than.

I wish I'd never posted to this thread. YOU may not perceive your comments as pig-piling. I'll even say that I believe that most folks did not intend to pig-pile on me. Regardless, that's how it felt and, courtesy of today's posts, how it continues to feel.

Someone suggested showing this thread the door. Although I'm new, I agree. If it can't be banished, perhaps put up a warning sign...like the cartoons used to do for quicksand. "Cursed posts here! Beware!"

As for me on this thread, I'm done. Please don't refer to or address me further about this. I'm unwatching it.
Hardy hibiscus are a hobby, but daylilies are an obsession.

One thing we've all learned with this thread is that everyone has an opinion, right or wrong, it's their opinion. This time of year doesn't help, we've all seen it before when cabin fever sets in and we can't wait to get outside, squabbles happen.
We've heard from growers, sellers, shippers and buyers with various views on bonus plants and seeds. I'm not clear on the pig-piling, most of the posts are simply the members views on the subject of bonuses and not meant to be personal, but when comments try to make a joke out of what someone else finds hurtful it is time to put the commenting to rest.
