French Marigolds For Fall

These plants produce literally hundreds of blooms on easily grown, healthy, fragrant foliage. I particularly like the smell of the blooms, and so do the bees which are attracted to them.

Bumble bees seem to love marigolds. It is fun to follow them from flower to flower. Honey bees and butterflies like them too. I plant these near the veggie patch so the bees can have a variety of plants; and pollination benefits the whole garden. French marigolds range in color from red to gold and shades in between. The banner was made from the first photo.

The toasty warm colors of orange and yellow in the Marigold banner is so welcomed to the colder climate regions at this time of year. Yet verifies the dependable sturdiness the Marigold shows in the Summer/Fall season. A meaningful and well done banner, Leon, as all of your banners are.

Cal- Thanks for such a kind thought. There's really no secret; anyone can grow marigolds. I simply sow the seeds in a reserved space in the garden giving them about 2 inches of space between seeds. I save a row of amended soil that will allow them plenty of room to grow. (This is where they will be grown to maturity.) When seedlings are about 2 inches high I carefully dig and transplant them into the amended soil spacing them at least 15 inches apart (depending on variety). A 2" seedling can grow into a 20" diameter plant! I leave a few seedlings in reserve in case one or two do not survive the transplant. Water well when transplanted.

This is a view of the marigolds planted next to a row of zinnias. It is also my veggie garden as seen by the onions next to the marigolds. A final thought; I like to give them (all plants) a good feeding of Osmocote 14-14-14 time release fertilizer at planting time.

Thanks so much, Leon! Thumbs up

That's an awesome row of zinnias, marigolds, & onions (the only alliums I can grow).
Your pictures have inspired me.....never thought I would go bananas over marigolds.
But I can see how they would really brighten up the garden, as well as be beneficial.

So many to choose from! Blinking

Went overboard, Rolling my eyes. and bought seeds from Amazon for:
French Petite Mix (500)
Tiger Eye French Marigold (Tagetes patula) (500)
Orange-mahogany french marigold Queen Sophia (1.5 gm)
"Sparky Mix" (500)
Bonanza French (250)
African Marigold Seeds Crackerjack Mix (2000)

Waaaay more than I intended or need (a few thousand altogether).
If anyone would like some of each, please treemail me, as I'd be
happy to share. Smiling
