Curt brings his catalog out in February or March. So, these came out this past spring. He has one catalog per year, which has spring and fall intros.

Rainbow Mesa has been on my want list for years. I remember seeing it at his garden, as a seedling clump.

This year was the first year one of his bloomed here for the first time. Jelly Roll Morton. Big, huge UF-y raspberry red. Even with the horrible weather it was a standout. When I saw it at his place, it was still a seedling without a name. I am just a hair over five feet tall. I had to ask Sunny (Sundays here on ATP) to take a photo of it with my camera. It was so tall, I could not get a good angle on the bloom. Sunny is tall enough that she was able to get the photo for me.

Juli - I just looked at Jellyroll Morton and it's another wow factor and I am always looking for the taller cvs; they are perfect for a garden when the owner is ill and spends lots of time resting as they can see them from a bedroom window much easier than short cvs.

I would love to visit Crintonic, especially since the sculpted form just adds another dimension.

Jelly Roll Morton has the most amazing saturated raspberry red color. Somedays heavily pleated others a light folding in the throat. Great scapes, opens perfectly and still blooming here.

I have mixed feelings about them. On the one hand some of them look really interesting but I can't help but think that they are just crud seedlings that are being marketed as novel. If they weren't so expensive I would be inclined to grow one to see them up close.

While I appreciate that everyone has different tastes, there are hybridizers who have focused on this form, which is not new . To imply they are crud seedlings being marketed as novel is a slap in the face to their hard work.

Allow me to clarify:

I dont believe they are crud, and I understand that some hybridizers focus on the form. I meant, in a lighthearted way, that they can look like flowers that simply don't open well. I guess sarcasm is difficult on the Internet.

JWWC, this is a form that is better understood after you see one in person, especially if you can tear one apart. In person, they look different than flowers that do not open.

I, too, appreciate that everyone has different tastes when it comes to daylilies and I am usually quick to pick up on sarcasm, however, I missed it this time .... Although I grow a good number of UF's, I just can't seem to get all excited about them. I do however, respect that others like them and do NOT post my dislike of them every time the topic or an image of a UF is shown.

As Juli said, you really need to see this variation of Sculpted form to appreciate the 3-dimensional effect. Images are flat and no matter what angle is taken they do not show these blooms to their best or give an understanding of the form. They are not flat-faced mugshotable ( not sure that's a word...) blooms. I believe the image many have in their mind is of a normal, flat-faced Single form where the edges stick/tangle or the blooms never open flat due to cold or other weather related problems, yes, these are both incorrect and are faults. What is seen in some of the extreme pleated Sculpted forms, which raises the petals into an upright postion, is due to characteristics of the Form, Sculpted. Just as a cascade in UF's can softly hang downward or hang at an extreme angle creating a tangled mess of petals and sepals (sorry, maybe not the best way to say this). Some of us like symmetrical flowers with a balanced look of all segments doing the same thing. An unsymmetrical bloom can look like a trainwreck to those of us who like symmetrical blooms, me included. Below are images I took this morning showing several blooms of a Single form "stuck" at the top by the overdone incorrect ruffled edge, an EDGE fault - this is NOT a trait of Sculpted forms, unless one puts the overly incorrect sticking ruffled edge of these Single forms onto a Sculpted form.





Now in comparison here are a few Sculpted forms showing the open flower with the upright petals and the unique folding behind the petal..




I hope this clears some of the possible misunderstanding of this Sculpted subform and that anyone who wants to see one of these fascinating Sculpted blooms in person gets an opportunity to do so.
