That's Good! And I'm happy--that he's happy with the way things are coming along this year. Let's hope that the 'special ones' end up having all the other good plant qualities! Reading between the lines everywhere, I believe he has unquestionably high standards and ethics. Highly respected! So, good for him!!! Thumbs up

I agree, mags. Love the way the petals on that one roll back.

This is a place where you just can't spend too much time taking them all in during bloom season. And I like that they are only 19 miles from me-- no long drives!

Sounds like somebody's getting ready to order. Yeah, it's kinda sad when my last flower is gone. I think next year I'll buy some cheap end of the season bulbs and hold them until early July to pot up so I've got something around for late Sept/early Oct. I do that every once in a while, but it's been a couple years.

Actually, I enjoy this lull, break period a lot--watching the little seedlings grow and giving them all the attention they deserve after they went thru such a hellish summer. They're doing wonderfully and believe it or not, I had four more 'bobby pin' this last week end 106 days after planting--while the sister seedlings in that batch had been up for around 90 days. I wonder what parent pollen sneaked in on that one! And watching those seed pods getting fatter and fatter in the garden. My goodness they look good this fall! Who would have thought that--it was so hot and pollenation was a real job--not fun like normally is, I was worried for the worst. But things look really great.! And I'm looking foward to scaling two of my best hot weather performers!

Always something enjoyable going on in a lily seeders life!

Gosh... Orientals... I don't know why (well, I do) these are my favorite.
I even had some in the garden but it looks like most disappeared with time.
And last fall I wanted to order some but when I checked the soil requirements and then checked my soil (pH 7 everywhere...) CAN I grow these Orientals???

You can, but the more below pH 7 the better they will thrive. The ideal would be about 6.5. Usually adding compost will lower the pH gradually over time. And making soil modifications 'gradually over time' is the approach I like to take. You might consider adding a little calcium sulfate are aluminum sulfate sparingly in the Spring.

The key to soil modification is GO SLOW. As an added note, those soil testing kits available at garden centers are not really accurate but they will give you an indication if you're moving in the right direction. It's a good idea to have your soil checked every three to five years by your local agricultural service for a complete analysis.

The pH of the native soil horizon here in my area runs 7 as well.
