Gee willikers, what a lot of pretties. I am afraid I would have had sensory overload.

All I have is a little green Den Phal from the ACE hardware. Unlabeled but I think it might be Aridang Green.
The burgundy one is a noid find from back in October that just does not want to stop blooming.

I wonder whatever happened to @TedM?
Remember this post
https://garden.org/thread/view...
showing his gorgeous Rlc Pamela Herrington 'Coronation

First is one of my most prized plants, Blc. Pamela Hetherington 'Coronation' FCC/AOS. Bought this plant way back in the early 1970's directly from the Stewart's Orchids showroom here in southern California.
Here's a bit of interesting history: http://www.google.com/patents/...
The blooms are approx 7" wide, 8" tall and very fragrant.
Since Ernest Hetherington named the cross after his daughter, he must have thought it pretty special (and so do I !!!).

Thumb of 2015-01-29/TedM/cf15a5 Thumb of 2015-01-29/TedM/dfe4fe

and here is the patent again
https://patents.google.com/pat...

So when I saw a small plant for sale yesterday, I immediately remembered this story and bought it, for 20 bucks!! Does that mean, this particular clone came off the patent? Or was this unlawfully cloned in perhaps Taiwan?

Also, on the subject of missing Teds, we haven't heard anything from @Ted5310 in quite a while either.
Hopefully both are ok.

A member from the SAOS received the Grand Champion, Reserve Grand Champion and two CCE's, I wonder if those two big ones were her plants.

I know Krull-Smiths display took home a boatload of awards. Those 2 individual plants the Melody Fair and I think the trianine (sp?) were MONSTERS... I'm not sure they would have fit in a panel van. 😳

Bill, I'm making my way through the new plant tags and am wondering how I can tell if Blc. Sunspots 'Waiomao's Gold Leopard' is now a Bc or Rlc?

In this case, the plant is an Rlc. because the parent in question is a Rhyncholaelia, likely digbyana. If the blooms are round, full and good sized, 4" or better, that is because of the digbyana.
When Brassavola nodosa is the parent, flower size is usually reduced by a simple mathematical formula. If a 5" flower is crossed with the 2" nodosa, the flowers typically are 3" or slightly less. Nodosa reduces flower size in a cross where it is a parent. The blooms are usually more starry shaped and the lip is slightly tubular at least.
When the nodosa part of the hybrid is back 2 or 3 generations, the effects of the nodosa, size lip and spots get watered down.
Keep in mind to Lindsey that in plants with nodosa as a parent, the size of the offspring are reduced. You get compact plants. When digbyana is the parent, plant size is still very robust!

Spoken as a knowledgeable judge! Thumbs up

I usually check the RHS by doing a Grex name search
http://apps.rhs.org.uk/horticu...
not adding the Genus!! Simply type in Sunspots into the grex box
hmm, this comes up
http://apps.rhs.org.uk/horticu...
Hone in on the Rlc SunCoast Sunspots which is the only possibility?
http://apps.rhs.org.uk/horticu...

It used to be a Blc, is now Rlc.

Sorry, you need to type it in yourself....

People often told me for 30+ years that I should have been a teacher. Are you serious, dealing with goober machines or know it all teenagers???
No ulcers here thank you very much.
But now as an experienced orchid grower and such, my passion is to help others as much as I can with as simple, yet as thorough an answer that I can. While my brains, "coffee grounds" are perking, I try to brew something worthwhile if I can! Group hug Rolling on the floor laughing

Perhaps a tutor would have been more suitable! At least then you would have generally had a willing student - much easier to work with than a class prone to misbehave! (My mum is a secondary English teacher, so I hear all kinds of stories.)

Hi All. I am new here. I volunteer at the Alaska Botanical Garden in Anchorage Alaska. In 2018 we were gifted with around 100 orchids of various kinds from a kind donor whose orchid loving partner passed away. Some had tags with some identifying writing. Others not much. I have never dealt with orchids before so it has been quite a learning experience translating the tags with even minimal information into some meaningful data. I am joining the Alaska Orchid Society and figured I would have a wealth of information here also. Just looking at the initial threads here has been wonderful. I have already learned a lot about naming conventions that has been really helpful. I am trying to identify as many as possible so they may be accessioned into our database to begin an orchid collection. Since Alaska has 33 native orchids, we are also trying to locate and plant them in our outdoor orchid area. But our greenhouse is just right for the more delicate genus.
From -60 Alaska to +100 Virginia. Wahoo

Well you have certainly stumbled into a great place for information!
By posting images as they bloom, chances are if it is a species orchid, we will be able to get a name for it. If it is a hybrid, then naming it rests solely upon commonality. If it is a recent, fairly widely sold or grown hybrid, we can probably name that too. If it is an older, less widely grown hybrid then your odds of getting a name can be difficult.
Please check out the AOS web site. The American Orchid Society @ www.aos.org On their home page at the top, they have a pull down menu bar. Under the one labeled Membership I think it is, you'll find "culture sheets". These are printable pdf files that will help you in terms of learning about the major orchid types and how to grow them. It is not a know everything site, but it is a good starting point. Going to the local orchid club was a great idea too.
Again welcome and we are ALL at your service!!! Welcome!
However with older name tags, images and such, chances are we can all help you.
Welcome to the Orchid Forums and the NGA site.

Welcome! To the site! You will learn a lot here...and you do have lots to learn about orchids in your environment. What we don't discuss on a daily thread can be found through links. Lots of good info!
