Okay, here we go. These are just a few images that I was able to get from the Greater Cleveland Orchid Society Show.
We were kept so busy ribbon judging because the public would be clamoring in short order to be able to see the show. So I took what few images that I could on the fly.

This first little gem is Epidendrum magnoliae, formerly known as Epidendrum conopseum. It is a frost tolerant epiphyte that is not only found in Florida, but can be found along the coast from parts of North Carolina all the way to Louisiana.

These are starry, little dime sized flowers borne on the ends of slender pseudobulbs, they are an orange/tan color with a greenish lip. This plant was mounted on cork and had 22 flowers that were on slender racemes. There were seven pseudobulbs in total.
It's common name is the green fly orchid.

We had them where I used to live but they grew quite high in the trees, it was difficult to see them if you didn't know where to look or what you were looking at.

I can scratch that one off my list, as we only see frost (aside from the dew on the rooftops ) once every 10 years , or so.

This hybrid came to the table yesterday. And for the second time within a year, I was mystified as to why that happened.

This is Rhyncholaelia Hawaiian Prominence'America' AM/AOS. The award designation was NOT on the show label. There are two awarded clones in the AOS system. The other awarded clone is Carmela. Both are 80 point AM's.
When this gorgeously colored flower of good form comes to the judging table or appears in a show exhibit or show table, it is a " table jumper"! It leaps off the table at the viewer. The parents are Rlc. Hisako Akatsuka X C. Wendy's Redstone.
Now as an AOS team, we really have two options. If we think it is better then it's previous award we can upgrade it, say from an AM of 80 points to an AM of say 83 points. That is silly to me to pay for an award that is essentially gilding the same lily!!
The other option we have is to upgrade the older AM to an FCC! For that step, the flower has to show tremendous improvement. Here, this was not the case. We passed on this plant.
EVERYONE who grows Cattleyas should own this!!!

As I was saying yesterday in my report on the Cleveland Show, we were working quickly, I was snapping pictures here and there as I went. I really did not have the opportunity to wander the show before ribbon judging started.
But there, in the Greater Cleveland Orchid Society exhibit, was a stunning slipper,

To see this flower in the exhibit with other green and white slippers and green, white and yellow orchids, this STOOD OUT in the exhibit. It caught my 👁 immediately!!
Now this is an older grex and has 134 AOS awards. This clone is Paphiopedilum Maudiae "the Queen" AM/AOS. It captured its award in 1981. It is Paphiopedilum callosum X Paphiopedilum lawrenceanum. The natural spread on this flower was about 15cm., the colors were crisp and clean. To me this is one of the standards that ALL callosum hybrids should be compared to. It is that good. There it was, tall, majestic and proud within the exhibit. A real lady!

This next plant was the only one that my AOS judging team awarded. ( there was only one other award) This is Paphiopedilum Gigi's Charm. At least this is what the tag says. Confused D'Oh!
It is a hybrid of Paph. In Shape X Paph. Gigi. But, in researching this grex, it has not been awarded previously so we could not compare this image to other awarded clones.

BUT this plant was gorgeous! I must admit that I am not a big fan of single flowered Paphiopedilums. They have been coined as bull dog paphs or toads!!! Rolling on the floor laughing
Anyway, help me, I fell in love with this flower. The large basically white dorsal, the fine amethyst speckling and the yellow pouch are quite appealing. The semi-clasping petals are yellow, blushed and slightly veined green, the synsepal is paler yellow veined green. The staminode is yellow with a darker yellow "boss", the center.
Flowers measured between 13.5 and 15cm. There were 5 flowers on 5 inflorescences. We scored it a CCM of 85 points.
We so badly wanted to grant this a flower quality award and this is where we became a little unsure. Since as I mentioned, there are no previous AOS awards to compare this to, we came to this dilemma. The Orchid Wiz has three images for this grex. All 3 look really nothing like this, they are single white flowers with the same yellow but with a lot of brown and caramel. They are not at all spotted! Maybe down the road more of these will be awarded and this color form can be recognized. We could ask for an ID, that can be difficult. It is a recent Lehua Nursery plant out of Hawaii.
But we ended up going with the culture award. It essentially goes to the grower and whether or not it is a Gigi's Charm, it IS an immaculately grown plant in a 13 cm. plastic pot with 5 beautiful flowers!!!
I really liked this flower and had to share it with all of you.

Now here is the only Phalaenopsis image that I took yesterday! Incredible even for me! But honestly so much of it looks the same, BORING with a large B!!!
And then I saw this! I had to take a picture.

Now that is gorgeous! If you look closely, right and left at the base of the lip, it is like two little beady purple eyes looking at you!
This was labeled as Phalaenopsis MS Purple Zabra. Yes I had the same notion too. Well there is no Purple Zabra or Purple Zebra registered! None! So I am looking through the awards and I think that only two have been registered with "MS" as the first part of the name. Forget about Zabra or Zebra.
These were two inflorescences on a single plant, I think it was a total flower count of 7 with three buds. The flowers were about 3 1/2" wide and stunningly marked. With those two little beady eyes and creamy white lip, it appeared that there was a little face looking at you from inside the flower.
I hope that maybe Australis can find this somewhere and we can get either a correct hybrid name or parentage for this little guy. I thought that it was kind of neat!! I tip my hat to you.

Next up from the Cleveland Show is this gorgeous little Cattleya.

This is Rhyncattleanthae Young Min Orange 'Golden Satisfaction' AM/AOS. It's a hybrid of Rth. Viola Nugget X Cattlianthae Trick or Treat. And as one would suspect from the parentage, it is indeed 🍊!!
There is only the one AOS award to this grex with 148 flowers and 5 buds on 20 inflorescences!! What a show that must have been. This one from the show was 22/5/4. As a review, that is a special notation meaning 22 flowers and 5 buds on 4 inflorescences! Kind of like 'orchid shorthand!'
The flowers open a paler orange and darken with age. Some blossoms have a little hint of yellow but the award description calls it 'concolor orange'.
I noticed that internationally there are 8 other awards to more star shaped clones. I think that 'Golden Satisfaction' has Both the fullest and roundest flowers!!
These were 2" wide on a compact plant grown in a 5" pot with a bark mix! Just gorgeous. Thumbs up

Oh yes. I still have things to post but I did purchase 2 plants yesterday that just seemed to jump right into my hands!!
Both are sequential blooming Paphiopedilum species. The first one is Paphiopedilum glaucophyllum.
Thumb of 2020-02-16/BigBill/0031ce

It was $35 and was well worth it. I have easily seen seedlings for that price or more. This is a mature plant, 6" pot and in spike. It can bloom again and again from the same spike. One in yesterday's show had evidence that flowered 17 times on that same spike!!! Where can you find that?!?
The second plant I bought was a Paphiopedilum liemianum. It is closely related to glaucophyllum, primulinum, etc.
Thumb of 2020-02-16/BigBill/8a4748

It was $45 and in spike as well. Again, this is a sequential bloomer and rarely seen on sales tables. I can find immature plants anywhere from $40 to $70, but not in spike.
I gave you a close up image to show you the amethyst speckles at the base of the growth. I can not wait to see them flower.
I also contemplated a Paphiopedilum Rolfei. It was $55 for a single growth. There was a second growth that was cut off at soil level. It appeared to have rot. Scared me off!
As a side note:check out Rolfei in our database.
