This is the area I have been working on the past couple of week to erect the 2nd (portable) greenhouse. I had to move all the plants that were there to other areas, rebuild the retaining wall, put two raised gardens in, and then fill with wood chips. The greenhouse is 8 x 12 and will be erected on the left hand side.

Looking great, Jim. It will let you grow a lot more.

I'm still debating on whether I really need a second greenhouse. I'd love one for the tropicals and one for my cacti and succulents. They are all together in my greenhouse and doing well, but I think a dryer greenhouse might work out better.

Evelyn, if the new ones are too pricey, keep a look out for used ones. They are for sale frequently.

Karen and Jim ~ Thank You!

I think a building permit is required in my county. And then, where to place it?

To answer the question , the photos of plants were from last year .
I have some seeds started and just starting to show , today I have plans to get another couple dozen planted in pots.
Been working on the spring cleanup of the grounds.

Evelyn,
I started with just a couple of the shelving covered with plastic. they are/were cheap and require no permit . Of course it has limited space and will make you want a greenhouse even more Smiling

Yes, I have shelves with lights in the basement. This year, I am late to start seeds.

Got the frame for the 2nd greenhouse put up yesterday. I won't bother putting the cover on until I need to use it...probably May.

How often do you have to replace the cover on a hoop house?

Don't know yet since we just bought it. I have read reviews of folks saying theirs lasted 2-3 years before they had to buy a new one, but no mention if they left it on all year. I plan to only have the cover on from May to November, and then store it inside for the winter. Hopefully, this will make it last longer.

Over the past few days I got 100 peat pots panted with seeds: tomatoes, peppers and cabbage. I also started 72 pots with flower seeds. I also ordered a 3rd 33" Procyon grow light from HappyLeaf. I have been using these lights for a couple of year now, and have been extremely pleased with them.

I used to use the first one I bought a few years ago in the house until I built my greenhouse. Now, I start everything in the greenhouse, so I use them out there. I have them set to come on at 4 am and go off at 8 pm...16 hours. On real sunny days, they are not necessary, but we get so many cloudy, dreary days here in the Spring, and they make sure my plants are getting 16 hours of light a day...which I have found optimal, especially when starting seeds and nurturing seedlings.

Here's are a few pics when I was growing salad greens and cabbage in my greenhouse last winter.

Put the hoop house cover on today. I have to admit I am not impressed with the quality of this greenhouse for $384. I'll post more later on why...

I need suggestions for a bird "screen" on my greenhouse roof vents.
Want to allow beneficial insects but keep the birds out.
They fly in and can't find their way out!

Hi Mike...Not sure how you would fit it over the roof vents so they can open/close without snagging it, but you can buy bird netting at Home Depot with a 3/4-5/8 opening that would keep the birds out but let the insects in. I hang it over the front and back doors of my greenhouse during the summer to keep birds out.

Just purchased and set up my 4th 33" HappyLeaf light. I can now cover one whole side of my greenhouse (16' x 2'), and that is very helpful during the gray and rainy Springs here in the Poconos...which seem to be even worse this year. I really like these and have found them to be one of the best LED grow lights on the market. If you order, tell Polly Jim from MoonShadows referred you. I don't get anything for it, but they are good lights from good folks, and I like to be able to send them business.

@moonshadows thanks, what complicates things even more is that I need to poke out of those vents twice a year to deploy my aluminet shade cloth so the solution needs to be somewhat easily removed and replaced.
I'll probably end up building a frame covered with something that can be screwed on and off twice a year.

Funny, when I was writing my reply above, I was thinking about some kind of framing covered with the bird netting. Let me know what you eventually do. Weather is terrible, huh(?), for this time of year.
