How long till your first freeze? I think they like about 6 weeks in the ground first. Im in the south tho, so yea, someone else is needed for this one.

I'm in zone 5b in northern Michigan and I have planted before up to the end of October, weather permitting of course. I say plant them and they should be fine.

Everyone in the north thinks different on this. I won't plant beyond mid September myself, in fact, I no longer plant daylilies in the fall at all, I prefer spring. I would mulch heavily. I have read, as Pam mentioned, that they need at least 6 weeks to settle in before the first frost.

I am in 5b / 6a. I have daylilies still to plant. I try to have them in before the end of September. I have a few I wanted to move or to divide, but ith the awful dry, hot summer I am going to let them wait till next year.

In fact, I just got a shipment from lilylady today.

I'm 5b (I think) and it's past the point where I prefer to plant. I try to be done with that by the middle of September. Of course, I have a plant still in the mail because shipping was delayed. That one is going in the ground ASAP and getting mulched well.

I'd put them in the ground, but we can plant here at least up to the end of October, if not later, so I'm going to defer to the Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana folk. Smiling

Hazeleyes, I live in a zone 5 area and I also have daylilies to plant in the ground now. What I'm doing is using alfalfa pellets. When I dig my hole I dig a little deeper put a good handful of alfalfa pellets in the ground, mix it with the soil and then plant the daylily on top of it. The alfalfa pellets help to keep the ground warmer a little longer and pellets also help to improve the soil. You don't want the pellets to come directly in contact with the roots. I'm off to do some planting now Thumbs up Good luck with yours! Smiling
Life is short, enjoy the ride!
