Looks good, Jerry. Do you grow any other yellow roses? My favorite is Midas Touch, and I also grow Gold Medal. I used to grow Apollo, but it shattered so easily that I replaced it with another variety long ago.

My best true yellow is Julia Childs.

Sunsprite, Sunny Delite (major shattering here), Golden Masterpiece, Cha-ching!, Shockwave, Summer Sunshine, Midas Touch, Henry Fonda, Rise n Shine.. these are some of the yellows I have. Not including yellow blends (Oranges & Lemons, Judy Garland, Red Gold, etc). No buds here yet.. barely have leaves!!

Sunsprite/Sunflare tree rose from Nov of last year. Blooms from late spring to late fall. If I only had one rose, this would be the one. The tag had a tape for Sunflare pasted over the name Sunsprite. ??????

Sunsprite. Sunflare is I think a single petal, not a "normal" looking hybrid tea. Did your tree make it through the winter? I love how you did the ring around it with the multicolored wall stones! And look at all that space.. talk about opportunities..!! You can plant a MILLION roses in all that space!

I can always tell Sunsprite blooms because the outer petals often seem to quill a bit, making them look almost rectangular as the flower ages, plus the blooms really shatter easily. Also, I used to have Sun Flare (is that the one you mean? It's a floribunda), and it wasn't as brilliant or as clear a yellow as Sunsprite. I still have Sunsprite because even though the blooms shatter quickly it is a bright, clear, more lemony yellow, whereas most of the yellows I see have a slightly more golden tone -- plus I love the lighter green glossy foliage. Or is it that the petals on Sunsprite seem a tiny bit more transparent, making them look more lemony? Here is my Sunsprite:



And the new yellow floribunda I just got, Walking On Sunshine, is also a bright, clear yellow -- love it!

There is a pull-lock plastic tag on a branch saying Sunsprite. For fear of losing it to freezing last winter, I trimmed the branches to about 8 to 10 inches, cut the bottom out of a 30 gallon garbage can, inverted the can over the entire plant and filled it with bark mulch. I thought the bud union at the top of the stem should be protected.

It survived just fine and is putting up new growth for this summer.

I think Walking On Sunshine has great fragrance for a floribunda. I just went outside again and took a couple of shots of the plant with open flowers two days later, and I still love it. I've been keeping it under my slatted pergola until I decide where to plant it, so maybe the flowers would have faded a bit in full sunlight, don't know, but I really love the glossy foliage.

Molineux survived for me pretty well, and it was a baby from RU, so yours should be fine if the canes were thicker than mine (mine were about a little thinner than the thickness of a cigarette). Try Shockwave (http://www.helpmefind.com/gard...). 3rd year survivor for me. Summer Sunshine (If you can find it.. http://www.helpmefind.com/gard... I got mine from Home Depot) has survived 4 years now with horrible care from me. One of my Golden Masterpieces has grown about to 6" this spring from the bare ground.. the old canes got broken down to the dirt due to the dogs. Sunny Delite & Sunsprite are also awake and putting out leaves as well. I'm even shocked that my Julia Child, who was not a strong rose last year, is putting out growth, also from the bare dirt (well, bare mulch). Strike it Rich survived being transplanted, then ignored (unwatered) for almost a month and is putting out growth....

I ordered a "Walking on Sunshine" from Jackson & Perkins; however, it was a bareroot rose and isn't growing much at all. It's green, but I'm ready to see some growth on it. Last year, "Easy Does It" grew like crazy from a bareroot plant. I really want it to grow after seeing those photos!!!

Julia Child is my favorite yellow of the four that I grow. Golden Celebration has beautiful blooms, but also terrible blackspot. Charlotte is a pretty, pale yellow. Autumn sunrise was busy growing roots and shoots last season. It's parent, Westerland, did the same thing the first year. I should see more flowers this year.

I went to Lowe's for rebar to strengthen my trellis. They had 10' and 4'. I was told that the 10' wouldn't fit in the vehicle. Arghh. I'll have to keep looking. In the meantime, I hammered the existing stakes and added a few more to keep the trellis from falling.

The local Lowe's only had a few disease ridden floral carpet roses. No thanks. It is early for roses to be in stock here - our last frost date is May 30. The knockouts aren't even in the stores yet. Other people get such great deals at Lowe's. My neighbor got a flat of yellow pansies for a quarter. I seem to hit the store on the wrong days.

My favorite rose is EUREKA. Cooler weather gives it a lot of apricot coloring.




I tour a lot of public rose gardens and nurseries and the best looking yellow, besides Eureka, is JULIA CHILD. Nice soft fragrance too.

Update of the 'Sunsprite' tree or patio rose. The severe cutback last fall did not bother it at all.

how did you get the "tree" part to survive???

I cut all the branches (canes) back to about 6 to 8 inches. Cut the bottom out of a round 35 gallon trash can and inverted it over the tree, wide end down. Filled it with cypress bark mulch, making sure it was packed around the branches. Pulled a plastic garbage bag over the can when it became freeze time to prevent the can filling with ice during snows and rains. Removed the bag during warmer days so everything could breathe. Possibly just got lucky but it all came together and I will have really nice, fragrant blossoms until frost kills the buds.
