The squirrels were taking a bite out of each persimmon, so I picked the nearly ripe ones to take home. Each day, a few more ripen. So good!

I've never had persimmons. I'm not sure I've even seen them before. What do you do with them?

I'm also curious. Persimmons grow all around here but I've never eaten one.

I love them when they're ripe and soft. I've never cooked with them, just eat them like a plum. When I have too many, I can wrap them in newspaper and leave them in a box in the cool garage. Take out a few soft ones and leave the rest. One year I forgot them and found a big mess in the leaking box. I've also frozen them. Even if they're not quite ripe, they are soft when they thaw.

If you try to eat a persimmon that's not ripe, it will pucker your lips and the inside of your mouth.

To eat a persimmon wait until it is really ripe - until it feels like a water balloon. Then it will be wonderfully sweet.

Here's one opened with a seed on the side. I usually don't find big seeds in them. (The seed was from another one).

I think persimmons are delicious when ripe to eat as is, very yummy! I haven't had any in quite awhile.

Margaret and Shannon, if you were closer, I'd send you some! I'm the only one in my family that likes them. I did find a recipe today that I might try. Anything with a can of condensed milk can't be all bad! Maybe I can tempt 'em to try it.

I ate a persimmon yesterday! Taking Porkpal's advice, I chose one that was mushy like a water balloon. It was sweet and much like a plum. Definitely a good experience and I recommend it. The fruit wasn't one bit astringent.

I saw them for sale at costco, I think ~$7.00 for 3 lb. Now those free ones would taste even better!

Much better than wild persimmons ! We have a wild one on the side of the house. I made a point of getting some of the fruit before the squirrels this summer. Not so tasty. Thought I had photos of it, but can't find. Will look on my phone.

I bought mine at a local garden store a few years ago. I was told that 2 are better for pollination. They have beautiful flowers in the spring, so you need to buy them before.the blooms.

Did you buy two, Anna? I have one that's a tree. I love the blossoms in spring. I bought another one when I went to a swap in LA. I figured I'd like the fruit too. The little one is not happy where I planted it. I did get fruit off of the big one, but I'm not sure if it was because of the second one. I have a fellow gardener that tells me he gets fruit, and "he only has one". And I tell him he just might have a neighbor with the other one!

I did get 2 but only one gets fruit, maybe b/c of the locations (one sunnier and gets more water than the other.) I was re watching a you tube of a guy in California that has one growing the size of his palm!. How big do yours get?
