Steve: "AMEN" to the last paragraph in your previous post !!!
Here's another example of unwarranted snobbery I experienced:
Last year when I had my garden on a local garden tour, this uppity woman was here for over an hour snapping pictures right and left.
At one point, a group of visitors had gathered around and were asking me what ferttilizer I use on my roses and other blooming plants. I explained that since my soil is (fortunately) very good (for the things I do grow) and that I don't "feed' on any regular basis, I have pretty good results with my "hit and miss" feeding. I also was adament that NONE of my roses are anything unique or rare, etc. and that I just grow what "works" for me and my environment...and that I'm definitely NOT a hardcore "rosephile"...I just like what I like and that's it in a nutshell.
I told them I just use a generic all purpose fertilzer for everything and it seems to work fine for what I want. This snobby woman stood there the entire time shaking her head in silent dispute and I was getting extremely irritated with her, but decided to confront her privately after this little group dispersed.
She immediately came over and said (in an extremely rude and condescending manner), "You REALLY shouldn't be using chemical fertilizer. It's HORRIBLE for the environment and the water table......blah blah blah..." ad nauseum. to the point that I wanted to slap her upside the head...so I just walked away from her figuring I wasn't going to continue the conversation and risk causing a scene.which was already brewing.
Then she followed me and started in again and I finally said, "You're entitled to your opinion, which I'm not the least bit interested in hearing... and this isn't the time OR the place for you to lecture me...and besides...for someone who is so aghast and offended at my gardening practices and the "potential hazards" they present, you sure have spent an INORDINATE amount of TIME and FILM taking pictures of everything, didn't you ??? "
She just looked at me and walked away in a huff.
