Its winter and time to work on the garden ideas for 2013.
I am looking for ideas for filler or footprint plants to plant around taller plants to keep weeds down and camouflage the feet of same.

I kinda like the Hostas and Liriope. The Liriope is semi evergreen for me but there are sun tolerant hostas that are also drought tolerant and do not get too big like Grand Tiara.

Grand Tiara is drought tolerant and sun tolerant
Thumb of 2012-10-30/virginiarose/b33e46 Captain Kirk puts up with a lot of sun
Whirlwind puts up with a lot of sun
Thumb of 2012-10-30/virginiarose/b8946d June, good sun tolerance
Orange Marmalade, good sun tolerance

Some liriope can be quite invasive so be careful with that.

Liriope spicata is the aggressive one. I only have Liriope muscari, I've got the blue lily turf and the variegated which is my favorite.

I am also planting some Lamb's Ears ...Stachys byzantina. Looks nice around a tree. But may be a bit too tall for smaller shrubs/plants.
http://home-and-garden.webshot...

What else... I also tried Vinca minor, but around the tree I planted, it's not done too well... and it's supposed to be invasive!

Also some low/dwarf columbines, these grow really bushy in early spring.
http://home-and-garden.webshot...

Then there's that
Cerastium tomentosum... really covers all!

Iberis sempervirens
http://home-and-garden.webshot...
http://home-and-garden.webshot...

Phlox subulata
http://home-and-garden.webshot...

Some Sedums?
http://home-and-garden.webshot...
http://home-and-garden.webshot...

Edraianthus tenuifolius is also a low-grower (but at least in my garden, it's not very "thick" so it may not serve the -weed-shielding purpose)
http://home-and-garden.webshot...
http://home-and-garden.webshot...

Lychnis coronaria makes nice fuzzy-grey and very low rosettes, but that changes when they bloom - (and they reseed like crazy, but easy to remove when small)
http://home-and-garden.webshot...

Ajuga reptans - covers all and spreads by runners - so I only suggest it if you can control it, and cut the runners you don't want. Otherwise, I love it.

Hope you find some of them interesting!
:)

I think the creeping phlox is a great idea, I love pinks anyway and I could picture it flowing between some hostas. Does it need full sun or will part sun be ok. I would like to see a picture of the whole plant but could not find one. How long does it get so we would know how many plants it takes to cover an area. Green Grin!

Creeping phlox bloom time is shorter than what we were looking for.
This campanula was suggested on another site.Campanula Olympica
http://www.bluestoneperennials...

I also have and like Campanula Blue Waterfalls.

That is beautiful with a Hosta, does it come in pink?

Jo Ann, Blue Waterfalls is fine, I was just wondering about the pink.
What do you think of the Iberis sempervirens, that was posted by fixpix? I was also wondering if clematis could run on the ground around the other plants. I think I saw that somewhere. Green Grin!

fixpix, are those all your pictures in the webshots website? I am nosey anyway, I saw some beautiful countryside and family shots. Who were those people? Such a nice looking family. How do you like webshots as a photo sharing tool? Does the website offer any type of editing? I tried Flicker and a couple of others but I do not have anything right now. To me it just takes too long to learn it and set it up, I just don't have time for that so I decided to wait. I do like the idea of sharing photos, they don't do me any good just sitting around. Also I don't have a good camera and most are probably not worth sharing. Blinking Same problem, no time to learn a new camera!

Indeed, the phlox blooms once and it's done till nest spring :(
And I lost most of mine to drought. But I managed to take cuttings and stick them in the ground, I hope they root. Looks really nice on those few days they are in full bloom.

Susan...I am also nosey sometimes. IF I get a link, I try to access all I can with it.

Yes. All pics are taken by me and usually from my garden (unless stated a botanical garden or a hike in the forests - which I love!)

And... my family, yes. And... animals. We got a bunch of those!

WEBSHOTS... too late to suggest it. Looks like from next year it's gonna be a paid membership. SO... I need to find another site for my pics :(

Thanks Springcolor. nice one. I think I have some seedlings planted in a spot where I dug up other very invasive campanula-like plants, and as I didn't dig up all roots, many plants came back and I am not sure which is which. Silly me! I have to wait till they bloom.

fixpix, how much will they be charging, most of them do charge something. You have your set up so well, seems like it would take forever to set up new albums at a new site. Shrug! Anyway, you sure have some nice pictures and nice suggestions for the Camouflage ideas.

I believe Google's Picasa is free. I seem to be the only person who cant publish albums from there that everyone can see.
I resort to Smilebox. Its about $30.00 per year to avoid the ads.that are inserted into the albums.
