in my experience they are another dud. i admit i ordered mine later in the season, but the roses i got had root rot , one i am proud to say survived. i cut everything off.. the dead roots and shrivled canes .. there was nothing left but a nub on both ends.. it looks great now. but it was pretty sad for a while. they did send me a coupon minus the shipping! i hate when companies make you pay for shipping 2 times when they mess up!

The only problem I remember is the Nicole I bought from Edmunds' Roses a few years ago. After it passed the 6-foot mark, I realized they were selling Hannah Gordon and calling it Nicole.

Hmmm, I'm glad you posted about Edmunds. I have a credit here somewhere for them that I need to use. I ordered four roses from them last summer and two of them died fairly quickly. When I asked for a refund, they replied that they did not give refunds and that they had stopped taking orders for the season. They sent me a credit that I should have kept up with so that I could place an order for replacements. I wonder how many replacements they get out of that way... with forgetful gardeners like me who lose their credit notices?

oh i thought we were linking them all.. i wasnt actually recommending heirloom lol i think hortico is the only one i absolutely would never try again.. the others possibly .. but as long as the chamblees and ru are around im happy.. then again they rarely have the new ones.

besides edmonds is grafted.. i forgot to mention that.. some times people cant or dont want to grow own root

i put mine in an envelope up high with it sticking out over the computer.. that way i would see it lol

I prefer grafted roses, but it's a dying art, so most roses aren't available grafted. Own-root roses are so much easier to grow and can be sold so much earlier. Nurseries with grafted roses typically grow them for 2 or 3 years before they sell them, but I could swear Heirloom grows their own-root roses for only 2 or 3 months before sending them out.

if that. i will admit that edmonds grafts were excellent... the plants were uniform and a grade 1 or better size.. it wasnt deformed looking like a ball attached to the side of the rootstock and 3 canes coming out of the ball. i know they grow and all that .. but ive had to plant a rose crooked so the canes would be strait up.. the only problem is that: if im not mistaken they dig them up and keep them in cold storage for the winter.. and if they are in there too long they get mold and root rot. so if you do get from edmonds order early. most grafted nurseries do the cold storage thing so order early where ever you get grafted..
grafting is hard .. taylor sent me some tape and 20 belindas dream and duchess de brabant to use as root stock .. well i almost got one.. i pretty much butchered them. it takes practice thats for sure

I bought eight roses from Edmunds last spring and was very pleased. events beyond my control resulted in the roses remaining unplanted for over ten days. Seven of the eight were beautiful! The eighth (Princess Di-very picky girl) decided to leave us, about three-four weeks after planting. I called Edmunds and the replacement arrived within two days. THEN the princess woke up! Tried to pay them for the second one, but CS told me if I did I'd just get another one, and so on.......

They made it through the winter beautifully and are growing vigorously. I'd order from them again with no hesitation.

Last year I made the mistake of buying from Edmunds late in the season at their $100 for 10 sale. I was tempted to pronounce three or four DOA; and the rest looked pretty terrible when I planted them in the first week of June. The weather was unseasonably cool and I watered them every day to keep the roots moist. I got one flower from Bolivar. New Zealand survived, and thrived. The rest promptly died. So... I got NZ for $100 on sale! That must make it a pretty special rose.

Still, I knew that much of the problem was that it was a late sale. And part of the problem was that Edmunds had just changed hands. Jungs was having problems integrating the two businesses. I attributed the bad experience to bad timing and ordered again this year. What I got looked much better. Many of the roses are beginning to put out foliage after having been in the ground for about two or three weeks. Cupcake and Gourmet Popcorn have conspicuous foliage. Berries 'n' Cream and Europeana are a little farther behind. Dublin Bay, planted where it will get a little shade on its roots, is still far from sprouting leaves, but is quite green and full of thick canes. In any case, the order contained a dozen cultivars or so and I'll know in a year whether it was a good choice.

Earlier experience with them had been mixed, with most of the HTs I got dying quickly. But, then, where I lived at the time, that was what HTs did.

This spring's order, detailed above - with six minis, about eight hybrid teas, two climbers and four or five floribundas still seems to be doing well. One cane on Fragrant Cloud has died. Otherwise, each plant has set a reasonable amount of foliage for the conditions.
