I have a question. When you winter sow in milk jugs, do you need to get your plants used to the sun gradually or can you put them right out in the garden? Here is a picture of what I have that is ready to be planted. Two have Lupine and one has poppies ready to bloom.

Thanks for any advice you have.

Winter sowed plants do not need to be hardened off because they have been grown outdoors. That is one of the perks of winter sowing!

That's great Ronnie and Caroline. Thank you very much. I am camping this weekend but next week I will get them put in my raised beds so I can keep track of them.

Great discussion. I will stop collecting rotisserie chicken containers since they provide no head room like the lettuce containers.

I like milk jugs for smaller annual seeds, and paper-white pans or totes for tree seed.

Putting my recent (2022 - 2023) Winter Sowing How To post in here as it seems it would help, mainly to add to the good ideas here. What's special about this Top Ten Tips Winter Sowing blog post is the WS SEED LISTS including one I developed for brand new winter sowers who want a good first experience. THEN there are some extensive seeds lists adapted from others that will inspire those of you with winter sowing expertise or just wanting a challenge. I hope you find the post useful: https://reveln.com/2022/01/24/...

Also, I just answered a specialized question: What seeds can you WS for a shade garden? Try hostas, they can be winter sown, and astilbes, heuchera, columbines, perennial geraniums...

Much nicer than duct taping it closed.
