I think about you all at this time of year since you taught me how to wintersow. This year I have more of those crazy Sweet Shrub seeds we did the project on last year. I have some in the refrig now and others still in the pods not removed yet. I wanted you to know, if you are interested, I will be happy to send them to you if you want them. The one that is the most fragrant is the Michael Lindsey. Those seeds too are the hardest to grow for me. Shrug! Of course I am not a seed person but you all showed me it can be done even by me, and I am so grateful for that.

I have several of the plants left in the greenhouse but I am not sure if they are alive since they dropped all their leaves. But they do that in the winter, so now what do I do? Wait and see and pray a lot.

Happy New Year to you all.

Are you going to wintersow anything this year JB?

I finally bought my potting mix today.

I hate to waste the seeds, so I guess I will give it another go. If you know anyone who wants to try them, please send them to me. No trade or money necessary, I just hate to see them go to waste. I would also like to see someone get lucky and actually keep the plants alive more than one season. Mine were fine until Fall and then the leaves dropped. As I said, I am not sure if that is normal or did they die? Shrug!

JB, I'm pretty sure the leaves drop. I'll have to check mine when I get home. I wouldn't give up on them yet.

Hi All,

Has anyone winter sown american beautyberry or hardy hibiscus? I read beautyberry can take a long time to germinate, so I don't know if sowing them in jugs will even work. I didn't read anything about hibiscus but am trying to winter sow those as well and just curious if I'll see results in the next couple months.

(Please let me know if I should be starting my own thread for this question. Thanks!)

I have not wintersown Beauty Berry, but wintersown hardy hibiscus (Hibiscus moscheutos) with success. Go for it, AnnofPA.

Thanks pitimpinai! Welcome to the site!

Toni, I noticed you have your jugs taped completely closed. Is that a problem when there is a lot of condensation inside the jug? I was taught you didn't need to completely tape them closed, but I did on some this year and then got worried when I saw so much condensation and pulled the tape off halfway around the jug so the seeds didn't rot. What are you sowing?

I just tape mine in one corner. I find it helps get rain and snow into the jug. But I still get plenty green house effect when it warms up

I'm envious of all of you that WS things like tomatoes, peppers and onions... true, I could do that -- but I likely wouldn't have a ripe tomato until December Rolling my eyes.

My winter sowing has consisted mostly of things that I know will self sow -- the really hardy things (like bachelor buttons, poppies) I did in February, and then others (columbine, nicotiana) I did in mid March. I have 19 big kitty litter jugs sown, with 2-4 different things in each one; so far, no sprouts!

I only did 6 jugs this year, I think in January. Yesterday was a nice day and I looked at them for the first time since then. Two of them have sprouts- rudbeckia and agastache.

I just did a few things, yet another attempt at meconopsis, a couple of varieties of clematis and some dicentra. So far, nothing. But the weather here has been so weird it might not have been cold enough!

Winter sowing is a challenge for me because of the huge swings in temps but this year I tried again anyway. I did it traditional way and some in vermiculite. I got a lot more sprouts than I anticipated and I'm so excited because I finally got Erygynium, Mrs. Wilmott's Ghost to germinate!!! I have been trying for at least three years. I had two nice looking sprouts and today I noticed two more trying to push up!!!
