I was in a co-op for Messenger years ago - did not realize how little of it I would need, so I still have a few years worth to use. I don't think it does that much for the daylilies - but I do think it helps a lot of my perennials. I don't have as much leaf spot, streak, etc.

I would read various articles on the aspirin water to determine a dosage because as I have read, too much can be toxic just like if you swallowed too many aspirin

I wonder if the "quart" referred to in the first article was a typo and should have read "gallon" as 16 aspirins would definitely be toxic according to the bluestem article.

By the way, the bluestem article was another great read and pointed out that SAR activation from just one treatment should last weeks to months. Thank you, Tink3472, for the link.

Oh, I think I understand. The lady from Fine Gardening used two aspirin per quart for mildew and rust. The other article did not mention rust just boosting the immune system for general plant stress and disease. (1.5 per 2 gal.)

quote: from FG.
'Black spot, powdery mildew, and rust are a terrible trio of fungi, which can attack and destroy your plants. Scientists have found that two uncoated aspirin tablets (325 milligrams each) dissolved in 1 quart of water and used as a foliar spray can thwart these diseases.'

Well, after saying dont worry so much about the rust, I finally just threw away my Gaskins white double that I cant think of the name...named for Her Mother. Anyway, I cant keep the rust off that thing, it shoots up new leaves and immediatley is covered. I havent even had it long enough to bloom, but Ive had enough. Its right next to my Dutch Yellow Truffle and it is one of my top five favorites, Im not willling to fight rust all spring on it . It never had rust until it got the Gaskin as a neighbor.

It must be real susceptible, let me know if you remember the name. I know of a few real susceptible daylilies in the yard and I think I will dig them up. The ones I really like I think I will plant out front where there is more air circulation and I will spray them and give them some 3n1. Hope that will prevent them from getting rust.
Pam, can you put a comment in the data base so others will know? They don't have info on all the daylilies but I am thankful for whatever information I can get.

That's interesting to hear about your Dutch Yellow Truffle Pam. I had my first rust outbreak last year when I brought in some new daylilies from a southern grower. It caught me by surprise and it was awhile before I believed what I was seeing. Anyway Dutch Yellow Truffle was right in amongst all the rusters and never got so much as a spot on it before I got it out of harms way. I was listing my rusters/non-rusters on the database here, but don't know if I got them all done. DYT did great for me in the rust department, and it's one of the most consistantly formed peony type doubles I've seen. Both sunfast and colorfast here too. Very good over all daylily IMO.......Maryl

Here is a quote from a article I read.
" Daylily rust is currently endemic in the southern regions of the U.S. below USDA hardiness zone 7.
Fungicides for home use can also be effective at limiting rust on daylily when applied before disease is established (preventatively)."

http://www.apsnet.org/edcenter...

Also daylily rust is hard to detect at ports-of-entry because the foliage has been cut off.

I am shocked that they are shipping daylilies from other countries? Probably in the future they will make them leave the foliage on the plant. That way they can inspect them better.

I know with Hostas, you never buy a plant with out foliage because you would not be able to tell if it had a virus. Well except the dormant ones which are 100% root and you soak them in a bleach solution. (10%)
Which would also be good for the daylilies. You cut off all the foliage and soak them., don't remember how long, maybe you just dip them. Then you lay them on a towel to dry.

Michele knows she gave me a copy of the article and I need to look for it. (cannot post article)

Dutch Yellow Truffle is beautiful. Did you dig up your Gaskins to keep DYT from getting rust or does it have rust already. The database said it Shows Resistance, I was thinking about getting one. Thanks!

Ok Here's my question? I have daylily seeds (from the LA, what fun that is) growing in my greenhouse, when can it set them outside? My bet is after the last frost which is not good beause I'm pushed for space. I was going to pump them to 1 galon pots before moving outside. In my book the seeds were spendy so sure don't want to loose any. I'm zone 7 so we can get down to 20 if we get a cold blast but mostly upper 30's to 40's at night.

Think I should put more soil around them, they flop over?

I would not put any more dirt around them, you dont want to suffocate the crown. I would give them a 'haircut'. Cut those long leaves off back to the length of the next leaves down, it should encourage more growth, plus keep them from leaning.

Those will bloom May/June 2014.

They are nice! It made me think of a question that has been bothering me for a while and I figure with you living in Washington you would know about this. I heard that daylilies have to be protected from slugs. I had Joan Senior out back for three years and the slugs never even looked at it. If slugs are a problem why don't I ever hear about slug resistant daylilies. I have a whole list of Hostas. Confused

Slugs do eat daylilies but I think they prefer oher things. I'v never had to lay slug bait down around my daylilies but my coleus, hosta and ligularia is a constant battle. This spring I'm going to try the ammonia to kill the eggs.
