So I'm reordering and looking for something else I need!

OK, just had a panic attack. When I ordered this order last year, I put in my credit card, but they were having problems with their website so my credit card info was lost. Gentleman from GVR called on Saturday asking for a CC, and I explained that I was in the hospital and don't have access to any of my cards. Promised to call back on Monday when I did have access, so I did. Called on Monday, gave my credit card info, and we're all good (guy didn't want to give me the discount as mentioned earlier back in October for ordering 3 or more!!). Just looked at my statement and it showed that my credit card had been charged. Now, wait a minute.. he stated that he would run my card when the roses were ready.. does this mean that they're shipping 'em out NOW? No way! I can't take roses now!! Grounds frozen solid!! I requested late April, early May. Latest he could do it was April 15th. Well, if that's the absolute latest, I guess. So I call them up in a panic.. no, they're not shipping now, they just pack the roses and keep 'em in a cooler until shipping time so that they stay dormant. Oh, OK.

Whew!

Got a call two or three days ago from Mark Grim saying he was ready to ship my roses. "But," I objected, " The ground here is frozen solid." At least it is where I plan to plant these roses. "You do have cold storage?" I asked.
"Of course. I just thought since you were in Arizona..." he answered. "You must be up north."
"Yeah. I usually take delivery in mid March," I told him although it's usually a week or two later. I just don't like the idea of having someone who neither knows nor cares what zone I live in holding on to my roses any longer than absolutely necessary.

And, of course, three or four of the roses that his web site said were available when I ordered are not in the order.

At least he did not charge me in British pounds. He complained to me that his web site had been doing that. GVR is a lovely place to visit. Everyone who loves roses in the landscape should see how well GVR deploys them - when they are in that part of the country. I'm not sure I'll order roses from them. Not for a while.

My roses from GVR arrived last week and I was so pleased, very big and healthy! All have been planted and we've had good rain this week so their off to a good start. They are now on my list with Palatine as favorite rose growers to order from.

I'm so happy to hear that, Arlene. I've always thought they have the best bare-root plants for sale online in the United States and Palatine has the best in Canada.

I called GVR with an order today because I'll be seeing them on Tuesday. We're all going to Annie's Annuals to shop for non-roses.

Just yesterday I got my Annie's catalogue. Wow. The list of cool plants is so great that - dare I say it - it's easy to imagine gardening without roses. At least for a moment.

Annie's is GREAT, but pretty expensive, especially for us out here in the east.... Another wonderful source for young plants is Graceful Gardens www.gracefulgardens.com. (hmm, I need to learn how to insert a link) I use them for delphiniums and heliotrope especially. The plants are lovely and customer service superb.

Link worked fine Lisa, if ever in doubt when posting, you can always hit the preview to check how your post looks before submitting. I always do that when I add images so I can see their placement. Often I need to shift them or the accompanying words to make it fit right.

Thanks for the link, Lisa. It looks like Graceful Gardens is a great place to find vintage plants. I wish I had known about them when I lived in NJ.

The plants for my garden here in alpine AZ have unique requirements. They need to be frost tolerant. And they need to be extremely drought tolerant. Not too many nurseries have a high percentage of plants in both categories. So far, I think High Country Gardens and Annie's seem to have a fair batting average. I did get some Tasmanian euphorbia from Bluestone last year that are not yet dead. Their sedums and lavenders, though, perished in the summer sun despite regular watering.

OK. So now my order from GVR is in the ground. They arrived with beautiful cardboard tags identifying the cultivar and the production house. It's not something I'm used to seeing. The timing could hardly have been worse; the shipment arrived in the middle of a snow storm. But I have gotten ahead of myself.

It was an odd experience from start to finish. I ordered in September, and the online catalogue said many of the roses were already out of stock. Next day I got an e-mail saying their server had crashed and if I had ordered in a particular period of time, I should re-submit my order. But I hadn't so I didn't. Then, with every communication the list got shorter. They deleted Hot Tamale, one of three Brass Band, and both Lady of Guadalupe. Not a big deal for the two I can easily get from J&P next year - assuming some continuity in their catalogue.

I mentioned in a comment above that they were going to ship in February, even though I had asked for March delivery. And now I know that it was a big mistake to ask them to reschedule. The roses had been kept in cold storage with damp newspapers on the roots. There was no evidence that they sprouted while in cold storage. But the roots were pretty dry. And there was some desiccation of some canes. They would definitely have been in better condition if they had spent the time here, in the ground. But I did not have a crystal ball to tell me whether it would fall below 17F in that interval, and it certainly did get to 20F.

I will certainly never again order David Austin roses from GVR. Their DA roses came from the DA facility - they bear DA rose tags. Roses produced by and shipped directly from DA roses arrive in much better condition: they are bigger, the canes are greener, and the roots are still moist to the touch. The impression created by the marked difference in size is that DA roses sells their grade 1 roses directly, but fobs off their grade 2 roses to places like GVR which, in turn mark them up to the price DA charges. Even if it were not the case, that extra distribution step can do the roses no good.

I accidently ordered Sunsprite from two nurseries, Edmunds and GVR. So I planted some in the same bed to see whether there is much difference between them. Should be interesting.

Would I order from them again? I don't know. Definitely not for roses I can get from DA and from J&P. GVR might be a viable place from which to obtain Star roses such as Papa Meilland and Gina Lolobrigida. It might be a good place to buy Weeks roses. I know that it is a lovely retail center and that it is easy to fall under its spell. And that's certainly reason for people within driving distance of the store to buy roses from GVR. But I live much farther away, and I'm inclined to try a few other sources first.

Steve - if you'd like, I can keep my eyeballs open for Our Lady de Guadalupe locally. I picked mine up in a 5gal bucket at Home Depot last year for $20 and it performed beautifully. It was an Armstrong rose.

And, just out of curiosity, why on earth are you ordering roses from J&P? I tried twice and both times were horrific!

And now I'm a bit trepidatious as my order from GVR isn't to come in until April.... am I going to be spending that kind of $$ on dead sticks??? oh dear...

I doubt they'll be dead sticks. I've seen worse.

The roses from GVR that are raised by J&P will probably be no better than the ones you get from J&P, though.

I wonder whether some of the roses I got at GVR that were grown at J&P were actually grown on fortuniana rootstock. The rootstock on Sunsprite was very fine and hairlike - very different from the thick Dr Huey roots. That's probably not a problem for me in zone 7, but it might be a problem in a colder zone. I notice that Sunsprite was much quicker to break dormancy than other roses in the sam order. And that might prove to be a problem here. Dr H. seems to delay the setting of leaves until a rose is a little safer from our local yo-yo weather, here. In any case, one can know which rootstock one is getting at J&P, but it's not called out on the GVR site. I also worry that those fine filaments might dry out faster than DrH rootstock.

Thanks for the tip about OLdG! I need to get down to HD and Lowes and see what's there. Too much of my stuff I pay a premium for to get by mail order. It used to be I bought mail order to get better descriptions of what I was planting. But I now have enough experience that I recognize much of what I see at a big box store.

According to HMF Our Lady of Guadalupe was bred by Zary of J&P and is known in the trade as JACveryp which is a J&P moniker http://www.helpmefind.com/rose.... The rose you bought was probably raised by J&P for HD, since it's still under patent protection. I'm glad to know it did well. There's something about those silvery pink flowers that just seems right.

You can definitely tell my favorites based on how many pictures of what I have! LOL! I have five hundred million of like Vista & Sterling Silver, but only 3! of OLdG!

I think I did some research last year on Armstrong roses, which I guess are out of California, as I bought a ton of Sterling Silvers that were mismarked. I will say that almost 100% of them survived the winter quite well (the ones taht I nearly killed last year in planting/neglecting are iffy looking still). Only found them at HD and only reason why I knew they were Armstrong is that near the rootball was their tag with the actual name of the rose and not what the HD tag said. Hell, I picked up a couple of Sterling Silvers that were tagged like Mr. Lincoln (?)
