I know how to upload photos from my own computer, but for some reason I can't figure out how to use photos that I've already uploaded into the database when I want to paste them from the database into a forum post. I'm pretty sure I used to know how to do this, but now I can't!

What am I missing?

Update: Somebody deleted the post I wrote above from where I initially posted it (over in the Welcome and Help Forum), so I went looking for an answer in other forums and ended up here. And surprise, surprise, I see that my question actually got moved over here, but nobody bothered to tell me anything about moving it.

Anyway, I started digging around in this forum and found an old post that answers my question, I think.

The thread "Copying photo from plant list" in Site Talk forum

If these are the best solutions, then I've got my question answered. My thanks to the people who posted in that old thread.

And I'd like to make an additional request -- if site admins are going to move posts around, could you please at least let the OPs know that their posts have been moved, and where? That would sure alleviate a lot of confusion, not to mention hard feelings!

You can always go to your profile page and click on threads you have started but anytime someone posts to it, it goes to the top of your Home page so always start on the Home page for any updates. Since it hadn't gotten any posts to it yet, it didn't pop up. It got moved to this forum as it relates more to site functions plus this is also a more active forum.

I wonder if it wouldn't be a courtesy to post a notice to the original thread at the time it is moved. "This thread moved from this forum to that forum for this reason." That way it would get bumped and appear on the home page for the OP. Might help with confusion.

You're expecting someone who is asking for help with using the website to already know how to use the website.

Does that really make sense to you?

As Lauri said -- it would be simple courtesy to let the OP know what has happened to their post, and it would only take a couple of seconds to write the message. That would certainly be a more welcoming approach than just leaving the OP scratching their head in confusion.

The system used to notify a user when their thread was moved, but believe it or not, that notification actually ended up causing even more confusion for many people. They sometimes had a lot of questions, such as "What did I do wrong to cause my thread to be moved" and stuff like that.

I disabled the notifications and instead tried to make it easier and more intuitive to find your own posts by simply clicking on the person icon (where a "Your Posts" option is prominently included in the dropdown) and also adding it to the person's profile. This mimicks similar behavior found on other social media websites and since making that change I think it has reduced the amount of confusion by the users.

Yeah, they work like that around here. Thumbs down
If they don't like the place you put something, they just move it wherever they like, they don't tell you.
If they don't like that *they* think a topic has went off topic, they just rearrange your posts and create a new one and move people's posts there. At one time they deleted/erased a whole forum, so everything I had posted/saved there was lost. If you point out incorrect information in the database, you get your head chewed off, no matter how you do it-you will go about it wrong. I now add new plants to my own list, instead of adding them to the database as a whole cause I just didn't want to deal with it. Also in some forums you have to use correct terminology for the parts of plants and that sort of thing or your comments get corrected/deleted. I pretty much quit posting in the daylily forum for this reason. I don't think it is inclusive to new members especially. I quit adding anything to the database unless there are no photos at all for a particular plant and I need a photo to show up in my plant list.

yes people volunteer their time to post photos, database information, and to answer questions for new members and to give advice to other gardeners. A gift horse,.... which I am tired of having picked over, berated and insulted. I have equated a couple of the mods as the Karens of this site, who apparently just have too much time on their hands. Shrug! I just try to steer clear now is all. There are other members who do the same.

I'm sorry you feel this way. I did a few things wrong in the beginning, but no one berated me. They were very good about sending me treemails telling me how to do it properly. I was happy to have the info.

I opted out from the database completely. The "they" want it there way only.
I placed a photo of three of the same named Bromeliad grown under different sun conditions together for a comparison photo. The three were labeled on sun conditions grown to document the difference in appearance. When I added the photo to the database as documentation I was informed by "they" it was not.
I replied back for the photo to be removed. I then received another reply that "they" moved it under entire plant photos.
My thinking is that all photos are basically photo documentation anyways. Thinking But to place a photo showing the difference side by side is definitely documentation.

I did something like that once too, and they moved it away to somewhere else, I wish they had just deleted it. I didn't want it there, it didn't look like it belonged. Well, by the way, they pretty much own the photo when you put it on there, Thumbs down which I didn't realize at the time. You can't even go back and delete your OWN photo. I added some photos that later I had taken better ones of and would have liked to delete the older ones and add the newer ones. But couldn't. It really irks me that some people will add gobs of photos of basically the same shot. Some of them I have to look over to even see any differences. I don't know why they can't delete some of those replicates. But they don't have any problems finding my needle in the haystack. I agree

I too have been confused about the database category for documentation. At first I wondered if it's use was for text only but then I noticed some really nice photographs of botanical drawings in that category. The word documentation had me looking up it's definition and I guess there can be two different interpretations, one for written text and one for photography.

Written Documentation:
Material that classifies and annotates text, photos, etc.
Material providing evidence to substantiate data in a book, article, etc.
Material used to describe or explain attributes of an object.
Material recording facts relating to a subject

Photographic Documentation:
A narrative or story told through photographs
A factual record or report (sometimes complimented with text)
A photo used to chronicle events
A photograph documenting the appearance and condition

Whenever I enlarge a database photo, I don't really pay any attention to which category it's in but I think it's really helpful to see photos that show the details of a plant grown in different lighting conditions.

I'm not sure if there's a way to indicate in the database exactly what should be uploaded to the documentation category but it might be helpful to members so they don't erroneously upload photos to that particular category and it would also make less work for administrators who have to move images to a different location.

We do indeed have the ability to delete our OWN photos! To have your photo deleted, find the image in the database, click to enlarge it and scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and select: Propose this image be deleted!

That is not exactly the same as deleting the photos yourself. It is just submitting it to be considered for deletion.

I've done it a few times. The ones I wanted deleted have always been deleted. I don't see a problem with having an admin look at the situation first.

Here is how it was presented to me.
"This category is for things like historical documentation from catalog images, descriptions and drawings."
