Lightweight Rocks

By Dutchlady1

Like the look of rocks in your landscape but have a bad back? No young person around to help you move the giant boulders? Consider buying 'feather rock', so called because it is 'light as a feather' (it is a very porous type of lava rock). It is very attractive and a sizable stone can be easily picked up.

Great idea Hetty. We have a very large one in our front yard. You really need to wear heavy duty gloves when you are moving them. They are a form of volcanic glass and can really do a number on your hands.

That's what I was wondering, where to get them. How much money do they usually cost?

It is much bigger than it looks in the photo. It's partially buried. I love that rock.

That's a great specimen, Lynn!
Agreed on the wearing of gloves!
Our Home Depot carries them, not quite as big as that though.

Rocks in abundance in AR. That's how I got my name -- from building rock walls here. Lots of the rocks came from digging holes for planting and about all we got was a bucket full of rocks! I also rolled a lot of rocks down the hill behind the house, too, but these weren't boulders. I think rocks add a lot to a landscape. I will have to look into your nice feather rocks since I have been forbidden to move any more rocks. Two things I never thought I would buy is rocks and dirt! Perhaps I should change my name to "Former Rocklady."

I love rocks! I have a fountain in the garden that's fake fiberglass rocks, and I have it surrounded with real rocks. I'd love to find some of those feather rocks. I'll have to ask the big nursery in Spokane if they know where to get them.

I have been known to bring back lava rocks from out west. Several years ago when DH and I were at the Crazy Horse monument, they had bins of rocks, and for a small donation, you could "buy" a rock, or rocks. Of course, I couldn't pass that up. This was really an ingenious idea by the Ziolkowski family, as they got rid of the excess rocks and made money with which to finish their project, all at the same time. The family takes no government money and relies solely on contributions and admissions to the site to finish this project.

Years ago when our children were little, we went to Crazy Horse and there had been very little work done. About all we could see was a hole in the mountain. It was so gratifying the last time we were there to see this wonderful monument taking shape.

Live well, laugh often, love much!
I'll have to check with a local landscape rock supplier to see if he stocks this. I'm in my 60's, and the spirit is willing, but the flesh is definitely not as strong as it used to be!!
