Hi. This year I decided to plant my zephyranthes and caladium bulbs in outdoor container pots. The season is winding down and I need to use the pots for veggies. How do I dry and preserve the bulbs for next year?
I'm used to just letting them overwinter in the ground.
Thank You!

I recently read on one of the Caladium sales sites (and I can't remember which one) that in a warm climate where you will not have freezes you can just leave the bulbs in the container, allow it to dry out, cut any old leaves off and keep it in a cool but dry location like your garage. Come spring when the weather is reliably warm just start watering and once you see new leaves you can start fertilizing.

I also do what Alice says above. I move the pots to where they won't get hardly any water for the winter, and resurrect them in spring.

But if you want to re-claim the pot for your veggies, empty the soil and bulbs into something like a plastic grocery bag, poke some holes in the bag so it doesn't stay too moist, and store in a shady spot outdoors, or in a shed or garage where they won't freeze.

My big one declined by end of October, but my smaller ones in small pots are still going on the balcony. It's an experiment: they were sprouted from corms that were stored dry in pots. I cleaned and reported them , except for big one in June. So they are going pretty long for me. Still new leaves showing.
The big one produced good new shoots in large pot: I watered it and expect to have a good plant by end of Januaryđź‘Ť.
