Someone kindly recommended a product to keep grass out of my iris beds and for the life Of me I can't find that specific thread. I'm gardening in Oklahoma and the grass wants to weave every bit of landscape together! It takes over everything! It's a slow green monster that greedily fights for every nook and cranny, throwing tendrils above and below the soil. I've always had to weed grass out but this stuff is virulent. What do you gardeners do to fight grass?

Be careful. Any weed killer designed to kill grass (monocots), will likely also kill iris (also monocots). Some weed killers are designed to kill only dicots, and may therefore spare your iris, but also won't kill grass!

I use this Japanese hoe, called a tomita. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002SW31YA/ It's wicked sharp, stainless steel, and can handle all the rocks in our very rocky, and often very hard clay soil. I can just whack it into the soil and draw it toward me to lift out weeds, or re-edge the garden. I also have a similar pointed long-handled hoe. Both are wonderful in our hard, rocky soil. It took me most of my life to find weeders I liked. These are it. The fine point lets you weed carefully around those iris rhizomes without disturbing them. Love it. And it doesn't rust.

Thank you daisy.
I've been worried about killing the iris along with the grass. Someone mention a product which worked for them, but I have yet to find anything selective that would spare Irises.

I love Japanese garden tools I have a hori hori and a Hoe mei they are my go to for practically all my gardening. I need to get something I can use while standing. Gardener's World has repeatedly advertised the usefulness of a stirrup hoe but I've yet to order a garden tool online.

The product Grass B Gon will kill grass and not affect peony's, irises, or Daylilies. I've sprayed it right on them and no affect. It will kill grass. Not quickly, but surely, and it's most affective when the grass is growing. I know I sound like a commercial, but I couldn't have all the gardens I have without it. Quack grass would take them over.

I have used Grass B Gon. It won't work with wet grass but quite good when grass is dry.

Here's some options for your grass situation Rebekah.

1. a hoe
2. grass killer
3. hands Hilarious!
4. grass clippings
5. thick thick layers of ground cover/tarp with a thin layer of grass clippings/wood chips
6. hand rake and hand shovel
7. pulled up weeds

I know there's more, but these should help, hopefully.
Not only people give others signs, but plants do too.

disclaimer: this is a recommendation for research only
...... make your own decision to use based on your findings.

while manual efforts to control grass growing in small (er) iris plantings are definitely an option, That method becomes impossible for those of us who have extensive iris collections or commercial sized plantings and need to save time and effort.
I recommend that those forum members who DO have large iris collections do research on a product called Sethoxydim. This is a selective herbicide that is the active ingredient in a number of consumer level products. This is an effective remedy for controlling grassy weeds in a number of ornamental species plant bed issues, not just irises.
I use a professional level product containing this ingredient and i've achieved good control over grassy weed invasions in my iris field. I use this as a last resort, tho and only in areas that are heavily infested. I follow the label guidelines strictly and some iris varieties may exhibit some temporary yellowing and stunting of the foliage after application of the product, but that has been rarely observed by myself.
Use of a adjuvant (spreader/sticker) overcomes the wet foliage issue and improves the product performance.
I've used products containing Sethoxydim since it was approved in 1995 with good results

Thank you Tom and TBManor I'm going to try them out. This last season I used a non selective product. It was supposed to create a barrier for a year. This grass however, wasn't slowed at all, grew right through it. I'm hoping at least to use either of these products around the garden beds edges.
